I remove claws hook them where they are alive and well, and let em sit and if I dont have much luck right off i pop the hell out the cork and that has worked well for me if it's the right time of year.

I had luck with this at Lake Texoma but we were just hooking them and dropping them where the boats would dock.

best bait for small mouth IMHO.
use small ones and hook backwards through the tail. reel slowly over drop offs and rock mounds. Never removed any claws.
