Never been, but have you looked at the southern end of the Mexican Riviera, near Xcalak? There are some DIY fly fisherman down there and some guides. Good odds of getting a grand slam. The area is incredible and you can spend a couple of days in Playa if you need shopping and nightlife.

Thanks Wick. I'll look into that too.

I should also mention that I was leaning towards Eleuthera because there's a beach there that holds swell decently well and I really like to surf. It's tough to find good, consistent surf in most fishing destinations.

eta: I'm also set on the DIY thing. I'm willing to go with a guide for a day maybe, but I want to fish on my own.

I'm thinking we're gonna fly into Nassau then hop a small plane to Eleuthera.

Then this area would not be a good choice, there is a reef about 300 yards offshore where the water goes from very deep to very shallow. When we were there last year the wind had been howling for 10 days, 6-8' seas up to the reef, but just a ripple for the last 300 yards it was really remarkable haw the waves were crushed. Inside the reef, the was was 5-8' deep.

There was some legislation proposed that would more or less put an end to DIY fishing in the Bahamas. You may want to check into it to make sure that's no longer in play. According to yellow dog it's business as usual but you never know with those goofy island dwellers.

I've fished Eleuthera and Andros, both are decent fisheries. Good fishing, terrible food.

I've been keeping up with it. It seems the Bahamian government realized how stupid it was to turn away substantial amounts of tourism money so they're letting it die a quiet death.

Care to share your Eleuthera experience?

Were you on North Andros or South?

Personally, I think Andros is better for fly fishing because there are more places to get out of the wind when it picks up.
Fresh Creek is fantastic for DIY fishing.

Check out Hanks Place if you just want a super cheap bare bones room and cheap boat rental. Small Hope Bay is a great all around place to go for fishing and diving. Head through the South Bight to the west side of the island for the most pristine and untouched beautiful place to fish on earth. (You'd probably want to take a guide at least once - speaking from personal experience it is easy to get lost in south bight.). There are also some good cheap VRBO on Andros and Eleuthera.

Not very good surfing on Andros though.

It's better for DIY bonefishing than Andros. You can rent a car and not have to fool with getting a boat. If I were going to go back to the Bahamas for bones it would be to Eleuthera.

There are a lot of people on that rock so it's pretty easy to find a guide to bribe for some pointers. We bribed guides with good California grown and a box full of cheap buffs but that's another story.

If you have ever done any traveling to beach or island communities then you will not have a problem with Eleuthera.

Word. I spent three weeks in Nicaragua back in September so I thought about going back down there and checking out the Corns for bones, but I'm trying to diversify here.

I love it down there. The bonefish get thick. There was a school that came into the cove where our house was two years ago and I snorkeled in the school with a couple hundred of them circling me for an hour. I have great video of it too.

Cat Island also has great bonefishing and is even more secluded, but also easy to get into on commercial.

If going to Eleuthera, check United because you can go through Fort Lauderdale and check your bags all the way through. The Nassau airport is a dump to layover in.

Are there turkeys there? That's the only reason I'd contemplate going at that time.

Noted, thanks. I was looking at laying over in Nassau just because the travel time was substantially less, but I might do the Ft. Lauderdale route instead. I saw several flights through there when I was looking last night.

And make sure you rent a 4wd (they call them jeeps, but don't expect a Jeep) so you can get anywhere on the island, like surfer's and lighthouse beach. The rentals are all ragged out, so you don't Ave to worry about scratches.

And bring a Hawaiian sling to spear some lobster and Nassau grouper for dinner.

Check out Spanish Wells. It's right off of North Eleuthera. Lots of flats to fish.

If you know about it, then every DIY guy with a fly rod has walked all over those flats.

I would go over to steep and cheap and buy a pair or two of Costa mag bays with the amber 580g's for $80 and trade the guides for information.
