If my buddy shoots me in the arse and then has the nerve to stand behind me and take a freaking picture with his cell phone when I get well he better be hooking to the arse wagon because he has a beat down in his future.

It's the Bends, and it's very dangerous but most divers know how to avoid it.

I don't know much about it but supposedly there's another condition associated with diving a lot that makes you a little crazy and take more risks when you're down. It might not even be an actual condition, just guys getting cocky. All I know is the two guys I'm describing didn't make the best decisions.

No offense but how in the hell does one die from the bends in a scuba class? Did he have a hole in his heart or something?

Some people freak out underwater and if you're at 10-15' and blow up to the surface you could die

Yeah, but it is still rare that it would be fatal. Sad stuff

That shallow? I thought you had to be deeper than that. I have always wanted to get my scuba license and was thinking about doing it this summer so I really dont know. Do you have to stay at 10' for a while before blowing to the top to get the bends?

If you look at the physics behind the expansion of gas due to hydrostatic force it makes it easier to understand.

Every 33' the volume of air in your tank (and therefore in your body) is cut in half!
So at 66' you have 1/4 tank of air, 1/8 at 99', 1/16 at 132' and so on

The expansion from 1/4 to 1/2 and 1/2 to 1 is obviously a lot bigger than the volumetric expansion from 1/16 to 1/8

So yes, it's dangerous to be deep but the real danger in getting bent happens at the top of your accent

OK, I see what you are saying. I was thinking that I wouldnt care for going deep enough to be able to get the bends while coming to the top but I guess that can happen shallower than I thought.

So I'm assuming you know the story behind this. I would love to hear it
