So my wife asked me the other day if I would like to get a lab for hunting and to keep outside so our husky can have a friend. Not looking to get one now but maybe in two years or so. Definitely don't want to go cheap so I need to put money away here and there. Nothing worse than having a bad dog in a blind. What can I expect to pay for a good lab and training? $3-4k? I don't need a champion but I want a good dog that will behave in the blind and retrieve birds.

Buddy of mine bought a black lab years ago for $40. Best damn duck dog I've ever seen. Personally I don't think you have to spend a lot of money to have a good dog.

Get a $2,000 wildrose dog and spend another few thousand and be done with it.

That being said, my $200 lab is having a good season. And he's self trained.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way. I'll let those dog trainers come in and tell you how there's no such thing as a good dog under $1000

He trained it himself or he had it trained?

Wait, you have a $200 lab and brought it duck hunting with no formal training? It retrieves well?

By formal training, you mean paying someone to do what I was capable of doing, with the commitment?

If so, then yes. He's impressed me this year.

There were plenty of times that I didn't feel like training that I forced myself to do it. We worked from late October 2015 - this duck season to get ready. He doesn't have the finest tuned lines a field trial dog needs but he gets my birds without me having to leave the blind. It also built an incredible bond with my hunting buddy. Very rewarding process.

It was my first time training and I worked with some guys from the Amite River HRC. They offered some good advice along the way.

I'll be damned if I'm letting a 4k dog leave outside. That thing would be next to me constantly to protect my investment.

Interesting. I guess I never thought of DYI training. May pick up a few dvd's and books and give it a shot myself.

Get a started dog from a good trainer/breeder. Skip the puppy stage and its ready to roll when you pick him/her up.

This is what I'll do with my next one. I trained a $100 BLM when I was in college and he turned out great. Force fetching is really the only place you can screw up by doing it yourself. Get involved with a local hunt test group and you'll get a lot of good guidance and gain experience. I won't have time to train a dog again until I'm retired, but it is very rewarding.

It takes a lot of hours to develop a finished working dog that will act right when the shite hits the fan in a duck blind. No matter how you slice it those hours are going to cost you. You can choose to put them in yourself or pay someone else to do it. Even if you pay someone you better be prepared to dedicate a good bit of time with the trainer learning how to properly handle your dog.

There is no disputing a trainer will typically develop a finished working dog quicker and more efficiently than the typical amateur.

Look for a 3 year old finished dog trained by a pro that has actually been hunted (not a Field Trial reject), that way you know exactly what you are buying and be prepared to work with whoever trained her. Add in the the $ you will save on food and shots that you would have to pay if you started with a puppy and you could easily bump up your budget to 5g's and you will still probably come out ahead.

Hijack: if raised untrained as a duck dog, at what age is there little hope for training one? Ie can old dogs learn new tricks.

It's easy if you get the right dog.

Talked to BH today. They finished with English, now maverick is learning all the commands in French. No clue why, I don't speak French. Wildrose said I'd have to get myself lessons.
