What amazes me is the amount of people who run the river without having life jackets on and the baws who wear their waders while running out. You would think they would know better than that...

water weighs the same whether it’s in your waders or not

You get caught in a current or undertow with waders on, you're fricked... like trying to run through an air tunnel with a bigarse parachute

It's pretty hard to swim with rubber waders on, and when you get an air bubble in the feet, it makes your feet float up. I've been in that situation once. That being said, there's no way I'm getting dressed when I get to my spot. That's done at the launch.

Panicked people drown in every situation easier than calm people.

Eta: I am a very good swimmer, so I didn't freak out when I went under. I let my feet float up, got my bearings, and got ready to take the waders off. Put my legs vertical next to get the bubble out, and kicked off the waders. Wasn't easy since I was wearing jeans under them. I did all of that while floating down a bayou. Waders then went underwater, and popped up about 15ft away.

Hell, a lot of people will drown if they fall in the water with just jeans on

All three had waders on and no life jackets. 2 baws and a dog made it back to shore and one unfortunately didn’t. Sad day for his buddies and family! Buddies were pretty upset

Sad situation all around and prayers to the family or loved ones.

Neoprene waders keep you afloat but they force you feet up. Neoprene waders do not cause you to sink.

High river, fast current and strong NE winds made it very dangerous this morning. I’ve heard of two other mud boats sinking today, fortunately they both were picked up by other boats.

Always wear a life jacket and keep a floating handheld VHF readily available at all times running the river especially early in the am run down the river.

Be careful out there.

I heard that a couple of boats capsized while crossing the river this am.

All I know for sure is that wind was kicking this am.

Wind was/is terrible. We still at the camp and heard very little shooting across this river. I think a lot of people turned around and went home

Was here and hunted (larger boat) considered not going wind was that bad. We got off main pass and saw someone shoot two flares. Called coast guard as no way we could get there. Still haven’t heard what happened with them. They are still flying over my camp looking for the fort Jackson group. Sad deal

I was down in Venice by the river pilots a few years when they pulled 2 guys out the river. Not worth it to even try crossing the river in a mud boat in these types of conditions.

Not condoning this group but you see it all the time.

These young guys high school or just out with little or no outdoor or boating experience going out prior to daylight. (The Duck Dynasty Generation).

It's dangerous.

I hate hearing these stories

If you traveling the river in mud boat, you need to travel light or have a bigger pilot boat. And wear life vests.

I saw a guy finishing concrete fall into the shallow end of a swimming pool almost drown. He was fighting the whole time until his son jumped in and grabbed him in a bear hug and made him stand up. The water was 3’ deep.
