I'm looking into getting my parents' dog into an obedience class as a Christmas present. Dog will never be used to hunt. It's a damn hyper pup that just needs to know how to act right. Any recommendations for classes in the southeast EBR area?

She's a mutt, but definitely has some kind of hound in her.

Petsmart does them, but they usually aren't any good. I know a girl that used to teach the Petsmart classes, and her dogs were pretty bad and never listened

There is no other in Baton Rouge that comes anywhere close. He literally wrote the book. Larry isn't around anymore but the two guys he trained are still here.

Chuck McCall trains hunt test dogs in Baton Rouge, but obedience is obedience, send it to him for a month or two.

I have an 8 month old lab that was out of control. Trainer told me to go buy a pronged choke collar(swore Id never use one) and teach the dog to walk on that. She told me to put some rocks in cans and scare the shite out of the dog if it jumps on us inside...keep one by front door and back door.

After ONE WEEK, it was like we had a different dog.

Larry is very much alive. You are thinking of Dick Russell.

Larry Benoit is very talented. I ended up moving so I only got about half the course accomplished, but I still felt like I got my money's worth.

We used Larry and would recommend his classes, plus you can always go back at no charge if you feel your dog needs a refresher course
