For those of you that have done this what steps do you take when boiling? I did one years ago and it turned out pretty good but just curious what everyone else does. I took one to the taxidermist to do a few years back and the one I did when I was in high school looks better.

Peroxide in the water? Bleach? What's best to wrap the bar of antlers? Any tips would be appreciated.

Here's how far I've gotten:

Expect to boil for 3-4 hours. Check it about every hour and get what you can off it every time u check it. When you're done let it dry over night, cover horns and spray a coat of flat white paint

After you boil it, carefully pressure wash to remove all meat. Then put in a disposable aluminum pan with a couple inches of water and peroxide. Wrap head in paper towels or old white rag so that the rag will stay wet by soaking up the liquid. Remove when it is white enough for your taste and rinse.

May have to try that with the one the taxidermist did. That thing came back real yellow.

Works best in your wife's gumbo pot on the stove. She'll be pleased at the lovely aroma.

Boil it at a somewhat slow boil with dawn in the water. If you boil it to hard or long the bones will get brittle and you will risk losing teeth. Check every so often scraping the meat and whatnot off. Be sure to wrap the antlers in foil while boiling to prevent discoloration. After you have it done, go to a beauty salon and buy the peroxide paste. Apply that on with a brush and let sit over night. Next day wash peroxide with water. As the skull dries the whiter it gets. Repeat the peroxide step if necessary. Never heard of using white paint. I have done 15 or so in my life for myself as well as buddies.

Trust me on the peroxide gel. It's way more concentrated than regular liquid peroxide and you don't have to deal with rags and what have you

Boil it for several hours. Refill pot with water as needed. Let dry. Spray paint with Kilz. I've done it with bleach, h2o2, and sun. Kilz is the easiest and fastest.

as other's have said. boil in water with a little bit of dawn to degrease skull. boil least amount of time possible and be especially careful with fragile nose.

after removing all flesh, place in container of choice with sally's beauty supply hydrogen peroxide 40. i use both clear and cream. coat well and leave soaked paper towels wrapped around skull for 2 days.

rinse and dry. repeat if necessary.
