My late uncle built a 30-35 foot wood cabin cruiser type boat from scratch.

But, he had the skill set to build a boat like this. When he was young he worked for my great uncle that spent his whole life building wood boats in Morgan City. When my uncle got drafted in WWII, he was put into the Navy where they would follow the invasion fleets across the Pacific and repair damaged and shot up PT boats and landing craft. When the Korean War started he was re-inducted into the Navy because of his skills in repairing wooden boats.

After his service he went to work as a carpenter for a well known NOLA commercial construction company and eventually worked his way up to being a project superintendent. When the WWII museum was first planning the renovation of that PT boat, he was approac he'd about being involved in that effort, but he starting having health problems and passed away shortly after.

He was a very skilled woodworker who could build anything out of wood.

I consider myself a competent hobbyist carpenter but would never attempt to build something like the boat in the picture. The skills required for that size boat are a lot more specialized than building a pirougue or duck skiff.

I built boats up to 32'. And I can tell y'all that one does need the skill to read wood. Building a cold mold boat takes a lot of time. The problem now is getting good lumber. Things have to be special ordered. It's not like you going to be able to run to Home Depot to pick up what you need.
