Different Names for Wild Game

Trying to think of the different names that a wild game animal may be known by:

sac au lait are also called white pearch are also called specs and are also called crappie.

Gadwalls are also called Gray Ducks

Coots are also called Pouldeau

You got any others?

Modled Ducks = Summer French

Coot = Pouldeau

Cobia = lemon fish and sometimes ling

Mahi Mahi = Dolphin

My grandfather had several terms for certain wildlife and game.


Wish I could share them with you but it would be grounds for getting banned....

a lot of the older guys will call mallards French Ducks, thats why the Summer French got their names. They look similar and stay here all summer

I THINK the real name is black bellied whisteling duck, but I've heard: squeeler, mexican tree duck, mexican whistler and more


Our house is loaded with these in the summer

sac au lait is in the lead with four different names.

I grew up in Central La. and we called the specs or white perch, but we all knew them as sac au lait too.

Wasn't till I moved to Arkansas that I had to start calling them crappie so people would know what in the hell I was talking about.

Here's another - Flathead catfish are also called Pollywogs and may also be known as Bullhead catfish.

sheephead=prison fish (what the black guys fishing from the bank in Dulac call them)
