Ask the question on the Kayak Forum on Texasfishingforum.com. You'll get a better answer there.

I'm sure that if you search there, you'll find previous posts, too.

did this in September 2009. 4 of us took two canoes. Two of us were serious fisherman and the other two just wanted to dip a log of snuff and drink whiskey while away from their wives. One of my favorite trips. The state changed up the land access, but our trip went like this.

launch Friday morning at some campground by a crossing. Forget the name. shoot rapids and fish in between.

find island as the sun starts going down. Fire up the stove for pastalaya and canned chicken. Drink whiskey until you fall asleep.

hit the river and repeat rapids and fishing until we found the state natural area, which is now in a different location. Repeat pastalaya and whiskey.

Portage around dolan falls, wrap canoe and lose all gear, and then haul arse to take out where Maureen the sexy arse ranch hand drives you back to your truck.

My buddy and I that shared a canoe caught a mix bag of 150 Guadalupe, smallmouth, and black bass over the 2.5 days. not too much paddling except on the last day where it starts to flatten out some.

Its an oasis in some otherwise rough country.

I think I watched a TV show on this last night. They were fly fishing Diablo kayaks. Looked like an amazing place, would love to do that one day.

Been several times and never had an issue. We usually stayed at the end of the Devils River right were it runs into Lake Amistad. Last time I went, the water was as clear as I have ever seen freshwater. I anchored my boat in an area that was 15ft deep and could read the beer can that was sitting at the bottom.
Really nice area, haven't been in a few years but would love to go back.
Once you get out on the open lake, you can cross over to the Mexico side. There have been reported problems there, but it's rare from what I recall. There was that one incident where with the couple on the jet ski.
They patrol the river pretty heavy at night,or they did. Now boarder patrol may not care since the boarders are basically wide open.

My trip was recently booked by a friend. We are going the last weekend in May. I'll see if I can get the details.

Both the Pecos and Devil's River are beautiful, with clear water, as they pass through Val Verde County. My dad has a friend with a ranch with the Pecos River passing through it. It is very remote though.

Watch the Daytripper episode on it on PBS for free. It's fun.
