Just read in today's paper that the west zone is losing a week of hunting from the first split to the second. This really effects my hunting because we kill 80% of our birds in the first.
The commission normally accept the Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries Agency recommendations which are a copy of what the federal agency of the Dept. of Wildlife hands down to them. Something to do with the migration (Mississippi Flyway) areas recommendation. But not this year.
Looking at the members of this commission, I see there is only one member north hwy. 190. Most reside in the coastal zone, and one in east, none in the west.
There are seven which are appointed by the governor, which six serve six year appointments. The other runs concurrent with the governors term. Three are representing the coastal parishes, and the other four at large.
West zone getting screwed imo, and if any others here believe this chime in.
First thing in the morning I'm calling my rep/sen and voicing my complaint. Whose in with me. Now I don't hunt anything else. So as to deer, turkey etc., I don't know how the other seasons fall, and don't know if they are as biased as the duck hunting seems to be towards the east/coastal, than the west.
The only thing the west has is mainly the sabine river and toledo bend, red river and small creeks, lakes and what not. Obviously the east/coastal kill a hell of a lot more ducks than we do in the west, and that's all well and good. Just don't screw with our zone, keep it 30/30, that's all. I would love the west zone just run straight thru, and I don't care if you cut two weeks off to 45 days. Over here in the piney woods, late season duck hunting sucks. Sorry for being so long, just really pisses me off. West zone and even all north louisiana are not being represented on this La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries Commission.

Holy wall of text batman! I don't have a problem with the change. It seems to me that the migration happens later than the season for big ducks here anyway, at least for the last 3 or 4 years.

Some of my point is, if you have an abundance of agriculture (food) for waterfowl, I can see where the migration of late season waterfowl will finally seek you out. Not so over here, we are just a watering hole for these migrating ducks. Sure we our share of woodies, and toledo bend hold a quantity of ducks but that's about it. Don't see the reason for changing the west zone splits from being 30 days 1st, 30 days second split. If it aint broke don't fix it.

There aren't many but when a front blows through we stop a few going south. They water here if not getting shot at and move on. When its good, which isn't very often, its real good. Mostly mallards. They come off of toledo bend heading south. Usually the first blue bird day after a couple of days cloudy and temperatures fall, is good. Rarely kill our limits. Horrible in the second split.

Good luck on reaching the commission. I have been disappointed to say the least one mailed all of them the day they announced the seasons. To date only one member responded Chad Courville. While I didn't agree completely with his points he at least responded to me.

IMO the commission should at least respond to e mail or return phone calls. Maybe that will happen this week.....

Wouldn't count on it. Imagine how many emails they get, good or bad, when they set dateS.

They changed the season dates in an effort to give a true split once again. The past few years the split was only 5 days and there wasn't a real break for the ducks. This year they reinstituted a 12 day split. It didn't have much if anything to do with adding days earlier or later in the season (although lots of people believe mallards don't show up until late January), it was all about the split.

I believe it is four that rep the coastal parishes and all four have marsh interests. That's why they moved the coastal zone up a week.

ole' Chad manages the property for Miami Land Corporation which is pretty much all on the coast. So needless to say he has a personal interest in early season dates.

This was put up for a vote last year to redistribute the positions "fairly"(although still pro coastal) across the state and the OB did not support it.
