I just tried to purchase my first firearm today. (I've had guns as a kid, but it was under my dads name)

Sales clerk ran my background check and it came back with a delayed status.

I have 0 felonies
0 mental health issues
0 domestic violence issues
0 indictments

Clean all the way around.

The clerk asked me if I had a TWIC card and I told him yes, I do for my job. He told me that sometimes something like that could put a delay, but i don't understand why a TWIC card would put a delay.

I'm patient and going have to wait until he calls me with the clear or wait until the 4th if he hasn't heard anything back.

Anyone else had this happen before? And figured out what caused it?

You can also have a name the same as someone that is not allowed to have guns so they have to do more investigation.

Yeah, that's crazy with the TWIC holding up a firearms background check. It would seem that if you were OK for a TWIC, you would get automatic approval unless something changed with your criminal record.

We had a thread awhile back about the TWIC issues.

And I have TWIC and purchased a gun recently and approval was in minutes.

Don't worry about it. Youll just be on a govt. Watch list from this point forward. Ignore that white van parked across from your house and the drones that keep flying over head. You visit any Muslim websites lately?

Yes and more than likely it will happen everytime. So no purchases at gun shows through dealers(not that its a good deal anyways) and you are screwed at stores that need a pass in order to sell(rather than just the three day wait)

You can probably get a concealed carry permit as a means to get around the delay. but check your state to be certain

There is only one other person in BR with the same name as me. He has a high profile job, so I doubt he has anything going on with him.

But I do have 2 close relatives in BR that has multiple run in's with the law and served time. We all have the same last name, close weight and height.

So I'm guessing that "could" be a factor......

ive had a TWIC nearly ten years and have done dozens of FFL purchases, never an issue. i think this TWIC thing is just anecdotal

obviously some people do get delayed for whatever reason but unless there's some acknowledgement from NICS that TWIC could be the culprit thats just a guess on the part of the clerk

this is correct. we've done a study where I work and about 90% of TWIC holders get delayed.

it's because the initial examiner sees you've been fingerprinted, but can't determine why. they delay it until someone higher up can verify that it was for a clearance, i.e. TWIC

you will get delayed every time. Get a concealed carry permit or a UPIN and you won't get delayed

^ this is the only thing you can do and the problem will be solved going forward. There are hundreds of reason you could have drawn a delay, a lot of them have absolutely nothing to do with you. The clerk can only speculate as to why based on similar criteria that other customers who get chronically delayed shared. As mention already a lot of TWIC guys get delays. It's far from a 100% thing though.

I don't know how much I believe the TWIC thing. I've had a TWIC card since they have been required and purchased over 10 firearms since then without getting one delay. It is more likely the similar name thing.

yall are both lucky. like i said, it happens, but the majority of twic holders get delayed

there is a very clear, defined trend. ill try and find my tally sheet. for every delay, we asked the customers TWIC or no TWIC, and it was literally 90% TWIC when we finished.

Maybe it's because a high percentage of the population in this area work in a plant and are required to have a TWIC card.....

If you want to find out exactly why you were delayed, you can file an appeal 30 days after the date you first filled out the 4473 NICS form.

no shite. but if you chart every delay and 90% have TWICs and 10% don't have TWICs, that sure is an interesting trend. correlation does not equal causation, but it's hard to ignore such a distorted ratio.

our gun manager spoke with someone from NICS and she said what I posted before: that the initial examiner sees a fingerprint on file but needs an examiner one step up to verify that it's for a TWIC and not an arrest. it's not a death sentence that TWIC = Delay, but it is usually the case.

not disputing your findings in any way, but cant you get an opinion from NCIS whether this is indeed the case? certainly if its happening in your shop, its happening all over the country, yes?

surely by now if it is indeed a matter of the fingerprinting coming up, NCIS can address. there are dozens of reasons people could be fingerprinted, CCP included. i got mine so long ago i'm not eligible for the pass on the check, so i should be in double-jeaopardy right? i got printed for TWIC, then again for CCP...still, i've never been delayed

just thinking out loud

the sample is from one store, which is clearly a weakness, but it's interesting for sure.

Pretty sure the having a similar thing isn't just related to where you live. More likely it would be their entire national database.
