Deer that are shot and never recovered

Made a meat hunt Thursday afternoon during rain. Took a lung shot on a doe right at dark, further than I usually shoot. Well, I could not see any blood, but could smell the deer. Figured I might have hit too far back and hit the gut. I looked for over two hours, finally gave up. Was sick to my stomach. Couldn't sleep. Went back to make morning hunt, couldn't take it any more. Got off stand at 8 and started looking again. Found the deer within an hour. I had walked within 20 yards of it the evening before. Never give up

Yes, had to. It was eating me up. I have been hunting for over 20 years and have never lost one.

It happens to almost everyone some point. if it's gut shot a lot of times they will head towards a nearby water source

Found her on dry mound in flooded palmettos, found blood on one palmetto. Caught the lungs, but further back then I intended. It sure was a relief to find her.

Good job. I shot a 7 point years ago. It was an easy shot at about 60 yards. I watched it run about 30 yards when I lost sight of it. I looked and looked and couldn't find it.
Every time I was in the area I would look some more. Finally after about 5 times searching the area I found its stinking skeleton. I died about 10 yard from where I last saw it. I walked with 5-15 yards of it multiple time but for some reason I just never saw it.
To this day I still am amazed that I couldn't see that deer right where I practically last lost sight of it. Crazy!

I was lucky that the temperature was starting to drop and that the coyotes weren't on their game that night, although something got a little taste around the butt hole, figured it could have been a possum that I saw while looking the evening before.

Talking about not recovering a deer. The big deer that I posted about being shot near my house ended up having a crossbow bolt under his skin. Apparently it was facing away from someone when they shot. It ran the length of the rib cage under the skin. It was healed over and he was chasing does. That had to have been painfull but he survived with a broad head in him.

Me and some buddies trailed one for 4 hours one night. The search took place roughly 2 hours after he was shot, bc we didnt have a decent flashlight and we wanted to give him a chance to die. He was in a wooded area maybe 100 yards wide x 4 miles long. Open fields/ farm land surrounded the wooded area. It was a easy trail to follow but seemed never ending. We eventually found him less than a mile from where we shot him. I guess we were basically chasing him in this small area until he tapped out. We eventually followed the blood trail over a log and he popped up on the other side as we walked up. Turns out he got shot in the chin... it was just hanging by a thread.

I lost a doe a few years ago with my bow. Made me want to never bow hunt again.
