I will be purchasing a deer stand soon. I am looking at a standard 16' ladder and a 13' tripod. I'm leaning towards the tripod. It weighs 66lbs, and therefore will be somewhat portable compared to a ladder. Does anyone have any thoughts on tripods, particularly one that is on the lighter side? I am reasonably familiar with ladders (been in a few), but I have no experience with tripods. Also, is one choice better than the other if heights are not your thing?

My knocks against tripods are the max height they can go and the portability

Ladder stands are easier to deal with.

I'd make the decision more on what's suitable for where you want to place it. The biggest difficulty with a tripod is it's difficult to conceal yourself. You'll need the drape that goes around the lower part for sure. Other than that it depends on do you need a 360 degree view or just 180 degree. As far as heights go you'll get used to both. 16 feet really isn't that high. I'd put a safety line on both but that's just me. I almost exclusively hunt hang on stands above 16 feet.
