I have to disagree with you about the 243. They just don't carry enough energy. Hell even only at 100 yards they only have about 1600 foot pounds. That's just around the accteotavke level. I've seen two deer this year hit directly on the shoulder and the bullet must have stopped there because I've seen both deer on camera since alive with wounded shoulders. Will not allow 243 anymore on property. 25-06 at the very least preferably 270

I shot a .243 for 8 years or so growing up, and now my wife shoots the gun. I have never, ever hit a deer and not found it ( I did have a few clean misses growing up). My wife has killed 3 recently, and again every one was a shoulder shot and complete pass through. I (or her now) shoot 100 grain boat tail soft points out of it btw. If someone is shooting the light varmint loads then, maybe I could see it, but the .243 is a perfectly reliable caliber for whitetail if using the right ammunition.

1100ftlb is more energy than the muzzle of a 44 magnum. You telling me a deer cant be killed with a 44? Your arguement is bullet size is the only thing needed to kill game. If thats the case everyone should be using a 50cal.

No my argument has nothing to do with bullet size and more do do with foot pounds of energy.

And 1100 is enough to kill an elk.

The accepted standard for elk is 1500.. There is a difference between should and could.

Elk have been taken at 200yds with a 243. Its not an ideal caliber for elk but it was done by hunters. A 243 is adequate for deer. At 300 yds the average joe probably shouldnt be shooting at that distance, but the gun isnt a problem.

Do I need to pull up articles where it is agreed upon by some of the most respected outfitters and hunters that an ethical kill on elk is 1500 foot pounds of energy. Again I will reiterate. There is a difference between should and would

Agreed. But we are talking about a whitetail and the energy is more than sufficient.

If you gonna make a bad shot with a 243, then the caliber dont matter. A 300 WIN MAG will make more damage but a bad shot is a bad shot. If you use a 243 and shoot the bulls eye at 300 yds, you can easily drop a deer.

Bullet technology has come a long way.

And a deer is not an elk. It is generally accepted that 1000 Ft LB's of energy is the benchmark for a whitetail for an ethical kill, and you could surely kill one with less. A .243, 100 grain federal boat tail soft point carries more than 1000 ft pounds of energy past 400 yards. Again, it is a perfectly good hunting rifle at short to moderate ranges. I would venture to say that most hunters, this board included, aren't regularly shooting deer at 400 yards.

I should note that I, however, would not take a .243 on an elk hunt.
