Last year we rescued a 6 month old (as best can be determined) Catahoula/Pit mix. When we brought her to our vet for her exam, the vet's face dropped. According to the vet, it wasn't the Pit part of the equation that concerned her, it was the Catahoula. She said that Catahoula hounds are one family dogs. They can be high strung, overly protective and aren't very accepting of anyone outside of the immediate family. She said that we won't be able to trust her around others. It is my mission to prove the vet wrong. So far, if I'm not ahead by a point, it's a draw. ETA: I'm gonna call, up by a point.

it is in their genetics, IMHO

true to an extent. pits and americans were not bred to fight or be human aggressive.

the problem is you had white trash and ghetto thugs breeding and training them to fight. I have seen this firsthand. These assholes see an aggressive gyp and want to breed them with a people aggressive stud because they think this is a "bad dog".

I would be the first to put a bullet in this type of "bad dog." They are bad for the breed. We have 3 dogs of different breeds and everyone in my family, especially my kids, would say that our pit is their favorite dog. Hell, my coonhound would be much more likely to bite someone that the pit.

As a family, we would definately get another American/pit like our "Weezy". she is the most loving and best dog we have ever owned.

More ER visits caused by chihuahuas than all other breeds combined, now they might not be as severe an injury as some of the larger breeds

Sounds like too much of a hassle I'd rather just have a pet that would have less risk of attacking strangers.
Same here. Plus, like Nodust said, some have much more pounds of pressure per sq inch so IF those DO bite there are a lot of "assumed" things before it even gets to court.

There are plenty of breeds of dogs that have no such stigman so why run the risk.

originally they were bred for "catch" dogs for hunting, but that was a long, long time ago

they have been bred for nothing but fighting for the last 100 years

Of course. They're used to bay lions. Hogs should be child's play. BTW, how did you know that the Ridgeback is the dog I covet? Do you know me?

When the breed was first developed they were bred for bull baiting (until outlawed), but did develop into "pit" fighting where they would through the bull dog into a pit with another to fight, hence the name, pit bull. but it's important to know that breeders that are true to the breed know that these dogs were never bred to be human aggressive. anyone breeding ANY breed dog to be human aggressive is not doing right by the breed.

Yeah, there are assholes that specifically breed for this purpose, but they are just that, assholes, and looking for trouble. These people have ruined the good name of a good breed.

With the term, "Pit" in their name, they were destined to fight.

Meh, it's not the name that was ruined.

Oh, tripped me out. I was trying to figure out who you could've been. Those close to me know that I have been wanting a Ridgeback for the longest. Trying to justify th $1K+ price tag.

I was offered a Ridgeback for free a couple of weeks ago. I turned it down...

I also am enamored by the Rhodesians but from what I can tell, you might as well just get a Black Mouth Cur because it's pretty close to the same dog.

I have a BMC and it's the best dog I've ever had in my many decades on this planet and it's not even close.

But yeah... love the RR's.

Don't let her read the human attack stats. Especially the unprovoked children ones.
