Actually Miranda was a trapper and a damn good one at that. He is an ok guy, he used to get on chat on one of the biggest trapping web sites and answer questions. But trapping couldn't come close to making him the money he made filming trophy hunts.

Some more pics to add to the debate. Also to clarify, this piece of property is surrounded by hundreds of acres of mature hardwoods and cattle pastures. One of the largest 8pts I've ever seen 146" was killed on it about 8 years ago. Some decent genetics but def a bad gene present because I have 2 high and tight 6pts on camera with similar body size.

Compare body size

I saw you mention antlers. I've always heard it's only a small portion of information you can use to age a deer on the hoof and also one that's unreliable. Here is a close up of the rack. Doesn't look like normal pencil horns you see on young deer

This property is hunted by only me and my dad. He likes to shoot whatever but is coming around and letting young ones walk. I have decided not to shoot a buck unless I'll either mount it or it will improve quality. The 8 is a trophy to me but the 6 looks like he needs to go. I want 3 year old 8pts at least to be 100-120 minimum. My biggest question is if the 6 is 2 or 3

Appreciate all the info

Great pics. The lot of them look healthy.

Back to the original question. Is he a cull? Given what else you've got going on its probably safe to say he's inferior.

The buck in the first pic is 3.5 and possibly/probably older. Aside from just being bigger in general I want to draw your attention to the bases of the deer in the first pic. The circumference is large. I don't care where a whitetail is from when a deer ages its bases get full and mass happens even if the number and length of tines remains stable. IMO, thats what's missing on the deer in question. No mass, no big bases, no width, no junk, no nothing. I believe the data shows that even with poor genetics in terms of number of points that you will see mass, etc with age.

The debate can rage on about racks and aging but I cannot see any way he's 3.5 years old. I'd bet my money he's a weak 2.5 year old only because if I stare at the posterior pic I can make myself believe his left beam is palmated even though it's likely just glare from the sun.

He's fat or possibly just distended. When I hunted the Ocmulgee Basin we saw lots of deer and pigs that were swollen like ticks. It was from eating a fermented berry which caused the entire stomach/intestine to swell with gas. Usually around the end of September.

Good luck, hope you bag a good one.

2.5s have doe necks and look like bird dogs.

Think the soybeans have their bells swole like that. I rarely put out bait but an 18 wheeler hauling beans flipped on the hwy and I couldn't help myself and went and loaded up a few feed sacks. Them deer sure do love it and pigs won't touch it.

Thanks for the input. I know aging deer on the hood is tough, especially a pic of a pic. I've laid out ground rules on how, or if I kill this deer 1) my oldest son gets a shot at him 2) family member needs meat (I'd rather take him out than a healthy doe) 3) I see him chasing a doe

The only way to age a deer is to look at the wearing of the teeth. Sure the physical appearance of the body is a general indicator but is not considered accurate.
