CMP Store in Anniston, AL

My job brings me out to the Enterprise/Dothan area fairly often. I wouldn't mind heading up to th store to pick up an M1 Garand. Two questions...
#1 this is no different than any other FFL dealer, right? I can just walk in and pick out my weapon of choice.
#2 does anyone have any intel on when the CMP is going to start stocking the milsurp 1911's I'm hearing so much about?

I think you need to be a member of a marksmanship club and also have proof of passing a gun handling class. I believe a hunters safety course will fulfill that need. You can join a marksmanship club on the Internet.
If you are law enforcement or military you do not need any of this.

The CMP is a government chartered entity with the legal purpose of promoting firearm safety and marksmanship programs. Part of that charter includes selling (I believe) .30 and .22 caliber surplus rifles to the public.
On #1, you will need four items in order to purchase a rifle from the CMP. First is proof of citizenship. This is usually accomplished with a military ID, passport, or birth certificate. Second is proof of age, which those items above should cover. Third is membership in a CMP affiliated organization. These include marksmanship clubs and the like, but most people check this box by joining the Garand Collectors Association. It's $25 a year and you get a neat little quarterly magazine. You can join the GCA online. The fourth requirement is proof of marksmanship or other firearms related activity. A concealed carry permit suffices here, but a certificate from a firearms course or similar activity would work as well. Take all of those items with you when you go. I took my passport, concealed carry permit, and gave them my GCA membership number and had no issues.
On your second point, I don't think they would ever sell .45 caliber pistols unless Congress changes their legal charter, but someone may know different.

What's the deal with this place. I've always heard of it but don't know what makes it special. Military surplus??

US Army surplus. Mostly M1 Garands and accessories like bayonets. Anniston is the South Sales Office, the North store is at Camp Perry Ohio. Basically direct-to-civilian sales and, if you qualify, the weapon you purchase hasn't been messed with by anyone other than the DoD and CMP trained armorers. They used to have some of the heavy barreled target .22LR rifles used for marksmanship training as well as the 1903 Springfield.

So if I bring in LE or military credentials I don't need membership in any organization to be eligible?

I know they were trying to pass an amendment on the NDAA to allow them to sell the milsurp 1911s. I am unsure of where it presently stands. They only information I can find still dates to May...

Yup. You can walk right in with those credentials. That's how I bought mine. Should have bought 3 or 4 more...

What came with the rifle when you purchased it?
For example, did it come with that sling shown and the TM?

Rifle, case, and documents including the certificate from the CMP with the rifle's type and serial number. Sling, TM, and en bloc clips I purchased elsewhere.

The CMP specials come with a sling but the other grades don't. A USGI sling and 25 en blocs will only add about $25 though.

Yeah I was just curious. I will never probably actually shoot the rifle it will be a collectors piece I can hand down to the children.

Get two rifles then, one a higher grade and the other a rack or field grade you can shoot. Lot of the lower graded models really won't appreciate in value so you can swap in a Criterion barrel and make it a good shooter to enjoy.

This. My recent purchase will eventually be re-barelled with a Springfield 43 barrel so the receiver, stock, and barrel are all period correct and then kept to pass down. The .308 CMP special will be the shooter.
