I am going to Hawaii in May and was thinking about going on a charter fishing trip. Does anyone have any past experiences doing this and/or any recommendations?
I am staying in Honolulu (Oahu)

Fishing is meh around there. I used to live right off of Waikiki and often walked to the marina to see what they were catching. It was pretty much the same: plenty of mahi (chicken dolphin), different types of small jacks, and the occasional ono (wahoo). There are plenty of photo's of massive Tuna and Marlin at the marina, but I saw none brought in, and I lived there for 6 months.
Side note, one of the perks to frequenting the marina, was I got to meet several of the captains. Most every customer that fished, had no place to cook/eat the fish, so they let the captain keep and sell everything. Being that I became friends with them, they would call me when they had fish they couldn't sell and they would just give them to me. Needless to say, I ate plenty of chicken dolphin while I was down there.

Is it easy to travel island to island, esp if its just for a fishing trip?

we took an island hopper from Kona to maui. It was an awesome experience. $75 one way.

Ive fished kona a few times. Its the best area to fish out if. Leave the harbor and you are about 1/2 mile from the wahoo area and then another 1/2 mile you are pulling for marlin. We caught a couple of marlin and deep dropped for AJ's and caught some GTs. I enjoy it but its not Louisiana fishing by any means. Pretty cool to be able to see the beach while reeling in a marlin.
