Changing a starter on a 4wheeler

I have any old Polaris 4 wheeler and I need to change the starter. When I search for the part it gives the option of buying just the starter or the starter and the "drive bendix". I'm not sure what the drive bendix is. Do I need to change both? I planned on changing the solenoid and battery also.

You know how you searched for the starter; do the same but change it from "starter" to "drive bendix".....here let me help you:

If I'm going to the trouble to change the starter. I'm putting in a new starter with new bendix.

The bendix is what the starter spins, causing it to roll outward on a horizontal plane engaging the flywheel, turning over the engine.
Majority of all the older polaris models I know of have the bendix located in the crankcase cover that houses the pullrope (assuming <700cc)
If you have engagement issues where the starter spins but the engine doesn't then its most likely the bendix. Much like others I'd change them both if I could afford it and have the time

You might want to look into changing just the solenoid. My old Polaris wouldn't start after Christmas. Was going to change the starter but did some research and determined that the starter wasn't bad, just the solenoid. Quick 10 minute job with a $10 part and I am back in business.
