In Texas freshwater lakes, we have sand bass (I think the same as white bass), hybrids, and stripers. People have trouble telling the sand bass from the hybrids and get popped by game wardens since rules for keeping hybrids are stricter. The most reliable way to tell the difference is to look at the tooth patches on their tongue.

Anyway, sand bass are a blast to catch and I always keep a rod rigged with two spoons to cast into a school. Guaranteed doubles every cast.

I filet them, massage the blood line out the filet under running water and you can not tell the difference in barfish or largemouth.

White Bass, Bar fish, Sand Bass are all the same. We actually have 4 different "striped" bass, a true striper, white bass, hybrid and a yellow bass.

Yeah white bass are good as long as you cut out the red meat. The small ones are really not worth fooling with by the time you cut out the red meat.

What AlxTgr caught was a hybrid.
