Have to replace or repair a bait casting rod and am looking for some guidance from you guys on probably a new purchase.

Will get used wadefishing in saltwater. Top water, twitchbaits, cranking paddletails, etc. I usually use 6'6" to 7' medium or medium heavy.

Budget is pretty broad and I'm not locked in to anything in particular. I'd like to hear what you guys have had good experiences with and/or would suggest.

Thanks.

Where are you located? Wade fishing, I’d recommend one of the Texas rod companies. Waterloo, Laguna, FTU, Sarge, Hookspit, etc. It’s amazing how much better it feels using a custom type rod that is made for wade fishing vs any rod off the shelf from a box store. Your arms and everything else gets worn the frock out wading without a super lightweight setup for wading specifically. For wading, I exclusively use a medium light. They are perfect for throwing everything you could imagine and handle big fish just fine.

As far as something you can get off the shelf at a box store, about the best thing you will find at an academy, at least around here in Texas, is a Castaway skeleton wader light or a Waterloo salinity. Both are good rods and will not blow the budget. They get the job done and nicely. Oh, and loomis makes some badass rods for wading also. Like really badass.

Thanks, guys.

Just from looking at website reviews the Salinity looks like best bang for the buck. I wish I could justify the loomis but it's just a bit much. Maybe next time.

You guys familiar with the Abu Garcia Veritas?

I'm in Baton Rouge so I'll hit up Cabela's, bass pro, and academy in the next couple days and try to put my hands on these recs to see how they feel.

Thanks again.

I have multiple Veritas for bass fishing. Good bass rod. It’s not a wade fishing rod. Trust me.

St Croix Mojo Yak. In this particular line they don't offer a lot of options as far as length/power ratings, but the 7' medium is perfect for wade fishing. Tacky rubber split grips and a short butt length. If you want more of a buggy whip they have a Mojo Inshore medium-light/moderate. I use the Avid version of that for specks and reds unless I'm fishing docks.

A Waterloo Salinity or a Laguna Liquid are some of the best off-the-shelf rods you can buy.

Don't skip checking out Superior Bait and Tackle. They have some great rods from great brands. I am partial to Zook and Star, they push a little bit cheaper rod but it weighs more and doesn't feel as good IMO, I forget the brand it was. As far as rods, I like medium/ medium light if you are targeting reds/trout with it. I use star rods, stellar elite, as my "house rod" on my boat. I was going to buy custom rods for myself, but I don't see a need to, they are great for money. Their Warranty pushed me over the edge.

The rainshadow immortal blank is a fine place to start.

I'm guessing they use a proprietary version.

There are a couple Pawn Shops in Denham Springs with 6'6" and 7' G-loomis rods for cheap prices right now. I got two in the last week.

FTU

I have a 6'6" FTU Green Rod "All Pro Titanium" with the recoil eyes and all I do with it is wade fish. Perfect for it. Overall light rod with short split handle butt section.

Laguna, Sarge, Waterloo (they make custom options which are higher end then their Academy rods) are some big custom brands but my FTU rod does the job for me in spades and I bought it second hand for $150

I really want a Laguna Lt. Tx. Wader. I like the idea of a fish ruler on the rod while wade fishing, but they're a little pricey for me. Falcon makes 6'6" wading rods in both the Coastal and Clearwater series that have a shorter butt section. I have the spinning version of the SWS-66M on my grandpa's VS 100 and really like that setup for wading. Just wish they were still made in the US.

7.5’ Cashion medium heavy rattle trap rod is the best rod I’ve ever used for fishing trout in the surf. It’s light and will really sling a lure out there.

I absolutely love mine. IMO one of the best bang for your buck off the shelf casting rods.

If you want to go custom, you can talk to Bo at Bo’s custom rods in Denham. He knows his stuff. While not cheap, his rods are more than fairly priced for custom rods. I think his basic rod starts around $225 but you can spend a lot more. I think the last one i had made was just under $500.
