Just moved in to new house and sod only goes so far on one side and would like to throw down some seed to get a jump on it.

You can absolutely put down grass seed. That said, Centipede seed has like a 21 day germination period, so it's not going to fill your yard quickly. Also, St. Augustine has to be sodded. If you want centipede, you may want to seed with it, as well as something less hardy that will germinate faster to get you through the early part. Be sure to put down some straw over the seed or it will all wash away along with your topsoil.

So, I brought some grass into the sod place around the corner to fill in some spots I had killed with an herbicide mistake this year. I wanted to make sure I was replacing like with like. Well, they told me it was underfed St. Aug, so I bought about 40 pieces of sod and did work. Came back from vacation and the lawn had grown taller and gone to seed...it was definitely centipede. Oops, I guess it'll be converting to St. Augustine over time. I actually prefer it, but I don't think my neighbors will be happy about it.
