How do you know he isn't capable of that?
I take ethics in hunting very seriously. I can shoot my bow accurately out to 80 yards but I'll never take an 80 yard shot on a deer with it. Things can happen between when the shot is taken and the bullet/arrow reaches it's mark at long distances

We will all sleep better knowing you are here to police everyone with your assumptions. Thank you!

There are whole lot of people out there who hit a paper at 300 yards once off of sandbags and think they can now kill deer which move at 300 from field shooting positions.
Killing stuff that far reliably requires tons of practice.

Why reinvent the wheel. .270 stretches out just fine to 400-450 yds on Elk. No issue and Ballistics are still there. Don't make it any more complicated than you have to

Sako 85 LR in 300 WM. Put a S&B on top and you set to outshoot Chris Kyle.

I have a McMillan 30-378 that I like a lot. Have shot targets comfortably out to 1000 yards. But, it's not much fun to do all day.
Instead of the common 174 grain bullet, I had Superior Ammunition (I don't load myself) load some 150 grain Nosler Accubond. I chose that specific round after testing several others and finding it the most accurate for my rifle.
The downsides to the 30-378 are moderately heavy, recoil, and long barrel makes for difficult walking in brush country.
Overall, I'm very happy with it. I've been successful on a Dall's sheep hunt.

I plan to buy a 300 WSM.

And that being said, very long range shots are for targets only. Don't be unethical and try 400+ yard shots on a living animal
Oh shite!!!! You done it now!!!

Herein lies the problem. I agree 100% with what you said. The problem, though, is that there are farrrrrr too many people who think a 2" group at 100 yards is "tight" , and that all they have to do is look up the balistics from whatever manufacturer they bought their factory ammo from, and adjust upward according to distance. Or that hitting a milk jug at 300 yards means they should be shooting deer at those distances. I would venture to say that the overwhelming majority of hunters who think they can shoot 400 yards have never done so, and are incapable of hitting a 1' square at that distance....present company and OB enthusiasts excluded, of course.
