Buying a vehicle with no title

Is it possible to obtain a salvage title or something similar if purchasing a vehicle with no title? Specifically an old CJ in rough shape. Looking for a father/daughters/son project but not being able to title it and register it is a deal breaker.

Every state is different, but search the classic car forums, they will lead you in the right direction. Some states it is nearly impossible, some it's downright easy.

about ten years ago I bought old classic car that didn't have a title
what I had to do then was go through my local Justice of the peace to get what's called a " possession or ownership" took a couple weeks but was able to get the title
basically works like this...
"In accordance with Chapter 4 of Title 32 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes, the Office of Motor Vehicles requires Justices of the Peace to pre-approve cases involving title to vehicles. This is done by having the person seeking title obtain a Physical Inspection Report, Form 3515, from a state authorized law enforcement officer. Many city police officers and Sheriff's Deputies are authorized to issue the form, as are many State Troopers. Essentially, the officer inspects the car, verifies it's VIN, describes the car, and sometimes runs a check on the vehicle to see if it's been reported stolen. Once the Form 3515 is obtained, you must bring it, along with all other documents you have, to the Justice of the Peace, where he will collect all information and forward to the Office of Motor Vehicles for internal review and investigation. It usually takes 5 – 7 working days for the OMV to contact the Justice of the Peace with additional information"

Check your state laws. You may not be able to register or insure a salvage title vehicle.

The only way you can't get a title is if the vehicle is labeled for destruction such as after a major flood or other natural disaster.
With your CJ being that old I don't think you would have a problem

good luck and let us know what you find out. Louisiana is not friendly to vehicles without titles.
