I'm not seeking recommendations on what kind of truck to buy. I know exactly what I want as far as the truck. I'm seeking advice on which engine is the best in this truck.

I'm buying an F-150 SuperCrew. I am pretty sure I want the 5.4 l, but I have seen the 4.6 L, a six-cylinder, and whatever the Eco thing is.

Opinions on these engines?

Please don't turn this into a Ford Dodge Chevy Toyota Nissan thread. I'm getting a Ford F-150. Just want to know about the various engine options

It will be a 4X4 SuperCrew by the way, which may factor into the opinions on the engine I need to get

I have a 2012 FX4 with the Eco boost. I wanted the V8 but decided to go with the Eco-boost. I like the engine but I think if I had it to do all over again, I'd probably get the 8 cylinder, though I honestly have no regrets, its more of a comfort factor for me (old guy, turbo's worry me).

It seems a lot easier to find the Eco boost, I think because the sold a lot more of them.

What kind of mileage do you get with the EcoBoost? And yes, I realize you don't buy a pickup for the mileage. I actually think it's probably not much better than if you had a 5.4 liter and I'm trying to prove this to my girlfriend LOL. She's a girl so she doesn't realize you don't buy a pickup for the mileage

The eco boost isn't a bad motor. Most of the reviews rate the chevy Silverado 5.4L small block higher with better fuel mileage. I would weigh the options of the chevy before buying a truck

And give me some details on the FX4. I am looking at a couple of King ranches, a couple of lariats, and a couple of FX4. What is your favorite thing about that trim package?

I have. No thank you

And I don't mean any offense by that. I specified in the OP I would rather this not turn into a discussion about which brand of truck I should get. I already know what I'm getting as far as brand. I am basing that decision off of at least two years of research. I have owned, ridden in, and researched Chevys and Dodges. And of course Fords. I'm getting a Ford.

Not great. This one is a 4x4, my previous truck was not. I got better mileage from my 2001 - 5.4 than I do from my 2012 FX4 Eco boost. Get 16-17 highway and 15-16 mostly local driving (don't do much of that) Got 19/17 in my 2001. Not sure what the 5.4 are rated for in the 4x4s now.

So you want an older truck? The 5.4 and 4.6 were dropped after the 2010 model yr. If you're not towing heavy I would go with the 5.0 starting in MY 2011. I have one and I love it. Strong, dependable and good mileage. I have 73K miles and no issues at all.

Yes, I'm looking between 07 and 09

Correction, I'm looking at 07 to 12, but I have my eye on a particular 08 with the 5.4

The 4.6, while less powerful, is more dependable than the 5.4 with their rear plug problems.

I would go with a 12 w/5.0. A more modern engine with a lot better power and mileage. A lot!

I kind of narrowed it down to one of those three when I bought mine or a platinum.

In terms of what I like, I never had a backup camera before or the heated/cooled seats, really like those. Those are standard on all three, I think. Had a Lariat before. I generally like the ride of the F-150 more than any other truck, I'm a little older so that is very important to me.

One negative thing I will say is the Nav system sucks (Maps are crappy and they want to charge you $100 for there yearly map update which is still out of date). I think there has been some improvements since 2012 in the Sync systems.

I added powertrax bed cover. That was money well spent for me.

Curious what your mileage is on the 5.0?

On a long trip from Louisiana to Maryland and back last fall I averaged right at 20mpg. And I was hauling butt. I get 15-16 in town. It's a 4x4. My SIL has a 4x2 w/5.0 and averages right over 19 overall. But he doesn't drive the way I do!

I never had this issue on my 2001. A couple of guys I knew with 4.6 felt the truck was under powered and the mileage was essentially equivalent. I made the choice on that truck based on those guys recommendation to go with the 5.4 vs the 4.6.

That was my suspicion. My eco boost does not get as good a mileage as my 5.4 got on my 2001, though it was not a 4x4.

Several plug issues throughout the 5.4's product cycle. Rear plugs were very difficult to get to with a specialty tool, IIRC. THis often resulted in plugs breaking off in the well, turning into a nightmare to retrieve. Additional, if the plugs were installed without thread lubricant, they were prone to "freezing" in place, particularly with those specific rear plugs. They also had boot/coil issues that were somewhat mitigated with a service bulletin/recall but that, while it could be expensive, was a relatively easy fix.

That's my recollection, at least. Personally, I would still not hesitate to buy a 5.4 to this day and would choose it over a 4.6. but I would probably try to go with the newer models with the 5.0.

The 5.0 is the only real reliable engine they make in the F150. The ecoboost engines are troublesome.

Check out this video of Ford mechanics.
