I'm planning a 2-3 night canoe trip down the Buffalo River in Arkansas in May. Any pointers/do's/don'ts from anyone that's done this trip before? Specifically i'm looking for some good hikes that can be accessed from the river. I'm planning on floating from Ponca to Pruitt.

I was also wondering about anyone's successes/failures of fishing this stretch of river. I'm interested in both spin and fly - and lure/fly recommendations are highly appreciated!

The time I went, and we launched in Ponca, a crawfish crank bait beat the crap out of soft plastics. Pretty much this Rebel,

Very small, and one of the brownish colors.

All you need to know about fishing!

As someone mentioned in your other thread, Buffalo Outdoor Center is the best resource for everything once you decide to saddle up.

Have fun!

Pumpkin seed or a dark green salt and pepper Gitzit. No weight in the tube. Throw it in the slack water on back side of rapid. Or let it float/sink through the rapids and into the eddy naturally. You will catch the biggest and most brownie (smallmouth) that way.

If you want to catch bream, goggle eye, or small brownie throw a Rapala crank crawdad near the weed lines or rocks in the slower pools. Nothing bigger than 1/4 oz, I prefer 1/8 oz for the kids. They get the most hookups that way.

Most of all enjoy the beauty of the surrounding land. One of the cleanest rivers in the USA. If you hit green water (super deep) may as well put your pole up and float along. I never catch much in these areas.

for a fly, try a near 'nuff crayfish in olive or brown or even orange. sink tip line really makes a difference sometimes as you can bounce it along the bottom.

I've been twice, both times in late June and early July. Awesome trip. I caught most fish on an inline spinner, 1/8 oz.

Where the buffalo meets the white river the water can get very cold and the current strong if the damn is open. Use a little caution as you approach.

This book has A LOT of information about the Buffalo River. It gives history, rock formations, hikes, etc. I don't think it has anything about fishing, but it should be able to answer any other questions.
