Broken Lug Nut Question
Posted on 4/17/16 at 12:34 pm

Had a lug break of the wheel hub. Hub has 5 lugs/lug nuts. If there any danger for driving with only 4 lug nuts holding wheel in place? FWIW, new hub has been ordered.
TIA.
TIA.

Short-term, no problem. Fix it when you can.

agree with Ice cream, in that there shouldn't be an issue for a day or so.
fwiw, most lug bolts just press in, so you may be able to take a punch and knock it out and then install another one pretty easily.

I drove my truck for years with a lug missing. Eventuallly I knocked it out and replaced it.

No, but don't be taking turns at 100mph. Just be conscious of what's going on

Go to AutoZone and buy a lug. Knock it out and replace it.

Nascar runs with one or two lugs missing if they need to save some time in the pits

Stud* The stud is what he broke.
The lug attaches to the stud unless you drive a silly German car and the lug and stud are one. The auto parts guy will be confused if he asks for just a lug nut.

Unless they get caught.

as others have said, you do not need a new hub. pound in a new stud

NASCAR is letting teams regulate lug nuts during their stops. Basically, NASCAR won’t penalize or monitor missed lug nuts or lug nuts that get knocked off during a stop.

That's a really easy fix. The "bolt" you need should have a square neck so it pegs in the hole.
To get the broken one out of the old hub, you'll probably need to pop the dust cover off, pull the pin, and back off the retainer nut.
Remove the hub and punch out the broken one. (Punch out an unbroken one if you want to take it to the auto part store to get exact match)
Replace the stud/bolt and reassemble the hub in the exact backwards order of operations that you disassembled in.
Drink beer.

Probably look something like this.

Depends on why it broke. Did someone overtighten the lug which caused them to stretch and weaken? Chances are the others were overtightened as well and are also in a weakened state. In that case riding on less than a full compliment of lug nuts will cause the remaining ones to fail quicker and you will get a domino effect. That's when your wheel comes flying off while you are driving. I'd at least knock the old broken bolt out and get a replacement while you are waiting on the new hub.
