This OT thread got me thinking about the recently passed law that allowed LA bowhunters to legally carry a handgun for protection while they walk to/from their stands. But LDWF still prohibits carrying any handgun caliber bigger than a .22 on WMA's except during firearm season for deer. Considering there's been at least 2 recent mountain lion sightings in LA on trail cams (plus possible encounters with aggressive hogs), any chance that LDWF considers allowing bowhunters to carry handguns for protection on WMA's

If they do, it will not be because of cougars or hogs. I hope they don't fwiw.

You can carry if you have a concealed carry license, but the reality is, getting in a car wreck followed by, falling out of a deer stand are your most likely was to get hurt hunting in Louisiana.

Don't have a CCP and not likely to go out and get one in the immediate future.

I'm almost always hunting alone and this year most of my hunts were with a bow. Would add a little peace of mind to have some extra protection while unpacking/packing my climber and walking to/from hunting spot, especially in the dark. This story always comes to mind because I hunt the same WMA this happened at.

You just have an irrational fear, nothing is coming to get you in the dark...

Such situations are not uncommon for hunters who target wild hogs or any other type of big game. Sometimes the hunter is on a trail that the animal intends to use, and the hunter has two options: Get out of the way, or get run over.

Even if you did want to get one, LSP is backed up about 14,000 applications right now. They are understaffed and overwhelmed. Classic - a Constitutional Right being slowed down by bureaucracy.

I've never understood why you aren't allowed to open carry a handgun for the hunt. If it's only bow season I think it would be pretty easy to distinguish a handgun wound on a deer versus one from an arrow.

If it's a major concern, just bring a pistol IMI. It's very unlikely you will ever get searched.

So can you carry any size caliber as long as you have permit during bowhunting on WMA? Link?

I'd be more worried about a hog than a cougar. The cougar would most likely be on your neck before you knew it was there

Once you send in your app you should get an automatic provisional CCP until your app is approved or denied.

That would would be better.

Y'all lobbyist get to work on that.

Is your personal safety more important than a law about the woods?

Of course it is.
I'm not asking if it's ok or not.

Been searched twice by LDWF when leaving Pearl River WMA by the exit. Both times checked licenses and then just asked to see the weapon I was hunting with.

Don't really wanna risk taking a chance on getting caught with a pistol during bow season and end up with a nice hefty ticket, or warden trying to confiscate my gun or possibly a deer if I was lucky enough to get one.

ETA: I've been hunting Big Branch NWR mostly lately and there's nothing that I saw in the BB regulations that prohibit carrying a pistol, so I do carry it there. Just wish the WMA's would allow it too.

Man, you're playing with fire there. You cannot have any firearm on the NWR during bow season at all.

quote:

Each person who hunts on a National Wildlife Refuge must have the required state license(s) required by the refuge, as well as any permits and/or user fees. The National Wildlife Refuge System Act of 1966, other laws and the Fish and Wildlife Service’s policy permit hunting on a refuge when it is compatible with the purposes for which the refuge was established and acquired. For additional information, go to: LINK /.

The law does not differentiate between concealed handguns under state permit and long guns (rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders) and it applies to all firearms, which are defined as a weapon designed to fire a projectile by the use of an explosive charge. All Federal firearms statutes remain unchanged.

Am I reading into this wrong then? Big Branch NWR 2016-17 hunting regulations

quote:

Possession of buckshot, lead shot, slugs, rifles or rifle ammunition larger than .17 or .22 cal while hunting

Specifically says rifle or rifle ammunition, .45 isn't a rifle round, so I thought I was OK?

Yes.

Those are not legal even during a legal gun season. So this addresses a situation where you could have a rifle for squirrel season, or a shotgun for one of the bird seasons. You can't have those listed items on your person even though you could have steel shot or .22 "bullets".

Not pulling up on my phone. Page 66 doesn't say anything about bow hunting and CC?
