Boat Trailer Woes -- Need Advice

Son bought an old boat with an old trailer as a fixer-upper. Boat has been fantastic, but bearing blew on trailer. It is now up on jack stands in my driveway. No standard hub will fit. Standard bearing kits don't work. Old hub is beyond repair. Options I am considering:
1. Replace axle. Is that a doable job for two men with medium mechanical experience?
2. Buy used trailer. Problem here is that I have to get the boat off the old trailer, which will not roll, onto the used trailer. Any ideas how to do that?
3. Buy new trailer. I can have it towed on a flatbed to dealer, which will lift boat off and put it on a new trailer. That is going to cost me about $2500.
Any ideas? Any other options? TIA.

Option 1 and yes. It's not hard

Tie boat to a tree and pull up to remove boat from trailer

Been there
Have axle made using a hub that allows grease to enter from front greasing the rear bearing first then come through front bearing. (SO much easier and safer)

replacing an axle should be nothing more than a couple of u-bolts...may need a torch if the old nuts are frozen, though.
I really can't believe that you can't get a bearing somewhere for the old hub...

like everyone else said. Get a new axle. It's just spring hangers, u-bolts, and a set of springs. Assuming it's a single axle. Just remember if the axle is on top or bottom of the springs for when u go to put ur back together.

Replace axle in no time. There a place in Lafayette that does nothing but sell axles. I can't recall the name at this moment, but their prices beat everyone.

Option 1 without a doubt, if your in BR go to Mike Gerald's Trailer. Last time I checked they had axles with hubs for 3500 pounds for $250.

Option 4 would be go to motion industries with old Bering and get replacement. Guarantee they will have it or can order.
If not option 1 is a simple task, measure and buy new u bolts.

Sturdybuilt.com when you decide to buy. Not even worth driving to the north shore from NOLA to me. Good site, good people.

I changed one on the side of the interstate on a Triaxle trailer in the rain. Not hard to do at all, even with a boat on the trailer.

I tried. Seriously.
We cleared the spindle of the old bearings and tried to replace with new bearings in the old hub. The old hub was damaged, and none of the rear seals will fit.
So I ordered new hub. They were hard to find, as the size is 1 3/8 on both sides, whereas everything for many years has been tapered (usually 1 3/8 on the inside and 1 1/16 on the outside). But I found them eventually. They problem is that they are about 3/4" too long, so the castle nut will not screw down enough so that you can get the cotter pin in.
So after all of that, I am left with new axle or new trailer.

Mike's place custom build them. When I had to change the axle on the side of the road, I call them up on what I needed. I was half way to New Orleans and by the time I drove back to them, they had it waiting for me.
There was no way of towing or trailering my boat due to the size and I had to do it were it was. Sucked the big one doing that crap in the rain too!

Did the same thing a year ago and the reliability of a sealed bearing axle system is worlds better than the old style with Buddy Bearings and such. If the frame is good, definitely replace what you need with a sealed system. It'll change your life...

I got lucky...changed mine at the Butte La Rose welcome center...was going duck hunting one morning about 3:30am getting ready to put in at the landing and "smelled" something not right...ended that trip but was very fortunate to not have it totally come apart on the basin bridge...
great way to start my Christmas vacation...

No thanks, that was one of those days I would like to forget. A 4 hour drive turn into a all day drive and a lost of a $200 brand new tire.
