Rattling in LA? With such a screwed up rut and high doe to buck ratio I wouldn't think that.

Used the can a little today in Washington parish, I've seen a doe & yearling since. No direct response

I can't say with any certainty that I have ever called in a buck rattling or grunting.

I found a grunt call on the ground once on the way to my stand. I put it in my pocket and got settled and blew it a time or two. This was in late December in SW, Ms. after the second grunt a huge buck came in trotting and attempting to get down wind of me. I piled his arse at about 25 yds. He weighed about 230#. I have tried it several times since with no success, but I have to believe he was coming to the grunt. Now I never leave home without my grunt call.

I've had one slip by me nose to the ground out of bow range during the second primitive weapon season in late January in Mississippi. Hit the grunt he stopped and circled back picked up my bow drew back but never presented a shot. When he turned to walk off I tried to hit it again but was breathing pretty heavy and the reed stuck, got spooked and rolled out.

Also blew the snort-wheeze at a younger deer who was chasing and he took off the other way like he knew he was in a dominant bucks territory. So, unless it's a big buck not stepping out I wouldn't advise that.

Biggest deer for me too date was grunted/snort wheezed in. I hit it sporadically throughout morning hunts, not so much in the evenings on food plots. As far as laying off the snort wheeze in fear of scaring off smaller bucks, that's not necessarily a bad thing IMO. Kinda like the old addage about catching big fish with big bait. But my opinion sucks. I haven't taken a truly big deer in some time now. So tifwiw.

where in WP do you hunt? I have a place just a few miles away from Thomas, about 15 miles from Franklinton.
I haven't had luck with a can or grunt. I have hit both the last week and got nothing. Last Christmas my neighbor said he walked out in the morning and hit his grunt. Then he said a big 8pt walk out of the trees on my property...so I dono. I'll be there Wednesday - Sunday and the rut should be going good enough so I plan to try some more

I hunted a place one time with great buck to die ratio. Every hot doe I saw had at least 4 bucks behind her. That's the only place I've had consistent success grunting.

When grunting works, it is amazing how fast a buck will come in. I wouldn't even try grunting in Wilkinson Co or W. Fel until.......right now until season ends. Next big frost with no wind will be money on a morning hunt.

I used to think rattling was a waste of time until I rattled four bucks one morning late in the season. I shot the last one .

But grunting by far produces more action for me.

I've seen some big one get pulled out of thick cover by rattling horns. When bucks are chasing it works. When the does are ready you can't get one to leave her.

A friend killed a giant 10 by rattling him in. The next week a new buck moved in the area hooking every tree in sight. We went in and tried making different sets in a creek bottom. Rattle and wait 30 min then move 200 yards. Last stop we didn't get anything and got up and walked 75 yards and he was bedded with a doe. The doe spooked and he jumped up grunting going after her. That's all that was on his mind.
