I was going to go ahead and throw some leupolds on but my buddy said the guy who put together his custom rifle said he can't stand them, and rathers the talleys. What y'all think?

I've heard Spuhr is top of the line. Their stuff is like $400 though

So these will should be good? Putting a leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40 on top.

Is there any advantage other than maybe looking "cooler"? Is there a possibility the scope will sit too hard on the barrel or something?

Talleys will work for your hunting rifle
if you decide to shoot long range, you can upgrade to a 1 pc picatinny rail and rings for stability and increased MOA

Will medium height rings clear the hammer on a handi rifle?

scope ring height will be based on barrel contour and stock design ... monte carlo, high rise comb adjustment , etc...
low rings will work if you have a standard stock (no cheek piece) and a medium sporter barrel contour

Ithas a sporter barrel contour and it does have a cheek piece

Burris Zee Signature rings with the inserts. Any others you choose should be lapped in anyway so don't spend a fortune on a brand that promises super precise tolerances that won't matter once the rings are mounted on the rifle anyway.

If I didn't live an hour and a half or so away from Hammond, I'd let you handle this shite for me man I don't really know a whole lot when it comes to heights, angles and all that.
My paw paw always had them put on by his gun dealer buddy, but I'm going to cabelas tomorrow and figured I'd scoop some up.
If you recommend the lows though, I'll grab those.

You work at the gun shop in Hammond? What's the name of it again?
Also I have to get a new scope mounted in a couple weeks on my Ruger American, it is in meopta meopro, any recommendations on rings?

Well looks like we will meet in a couple of weeks when I get back in town. I need to get the scope mounted and bore sighted and possibly order another rifle.

Hard to tell as the ocular end of the scope is a factor, as well. Get a hammer extension.

Good advice.
When given the choice, for the past 10-15 years I've been using only a Weaver one pice scope base (w/ multiple slots) and Burris Signature Zee rings to mount scopes on my handguns/rifles. Before using these rings, I used to lap the rings. You'd be surprised how much the rings were not concentric. I don't do this w/ the Signature rings.
