Im looking at outfitting my boat with radar for when I'm down in Venice and when we bring it to Florida. I am entirely clueless about it and want suggestions on things like broadband vs pulse, makes etc.

You want a stand-alone system or something to network with your current setup? I'm currently running a pulse Raymarine but my next will be Simrad broadband.

What brand of electronics are you currently using? If you are satisfied then I would recommended something that will network with your current setup.

The latest and greatest in the radar world is solid state radar. It works much like CHIRP sonar and use low power Doppler pulses to deliver excellent target separation and smaller target returns. Spotting a 1" PVC pipe is part of the norm with solid state. They use about one quarter of the power of magnetron radars and have no long start-up cycles. MotionScope, a feature on the Garmin Fantom line will actually show you which vessels are moving towards you and which are moving away. The same feature can be used to track thunderstorms. Fortunately, all of the brands deliver extremely reliable products that perform very well.

If a solid state unit isn't in your budget, then you are in luck because pricing has been scaled back on magnetron radars. Feel free to stop by our shop this week if you would like some more information. Let me know if you have any more questions.

You trying to use it to navigate river fog or offshore night? What size boat? So much new stuff out right now, a little budget and information is needed...

Not really much of a budget but it's going on a 26 foot triton. It will mainly be used for gettin through the sketchy fog and some rig hopping. Currently we have lowrance electronics.

That's tough to answer without seeing said boat and knowing what your plans are. Are we looking at a complete front-to-back re-rig or do you just want to clean up the wiring under the dash?

If you have a compatible unit, Lowrance's 3G or 4G radar are their options. The 4G is their solid state radar and carries a $600 (retail) additional cost over the 3G unit. Both will achieve what you want. There is a feature comparison between the two on Lowrance's website.

Do you want a multi purpose unit such that you should get rid of everything else you have? The Garmin stuff is really nice. If you want a good, reliable but small unit to add to everything you already have, get a small Furuno.

A few things to think about....

I use a Garmin unit which works with my 745. It works very well does everything it needs to in fog, dark it keeps me safe and I love it. That being said in a rain I can't adjust it to filter the rain. If I had to do over again I wouldn't get one that can't see in the rain. A "flare" option is also nice to see which way a boat is moving.

I will likely upgrade in the next few years to a newer unit that can see in rain when you need it you need it!

I honestly haven't been in the market for a long time. I bought most of my electronics in a time where combo units were in their infancy. I'd never argue about the virtues of anything new. I've found Garmin products to be very user friendly, even among the newer stuff my colleagues employ. Furuno has always been a workhorse that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend as well. That's the limit of my advice if he's looking for separates.

As for not seeing in the rain or fog, I've always known the gains and such can be adjusted to get me through most every situation. Power is key but if you're just needing what's right in front of your face, you should be able to dial any quality unit in enough to meet your needs. Am I missing "the boat" here?

Canard, mine works wonderfully in all aspects but the rain. It works okay at best in the rain, the gain just isn't adjustable enough in the rain. That is the only nock on the garmin and my unit isn't new either it's got a lot of years and miles on it. After using mine for many years I know what I want in a unit and I also know what mine can and can't do.

As far as user friendly Garmin is awesome, however on their older units there are a handful of limitations rain is one of them.
