Any of y'all baws got a bee hive?

I think it's an awesome idea, but I have no clue about how to get it started. Do you have to have someone donate a queen and a small colony? Surely you don't just set it up and they show up...

I found this kit on amazon. LINK

My dad had one when I was a kid out in Keithville. If I remember right, you order the bees and they come in a box in the mail.

It was pretty cool getting our own honey.

i have 2 hives of italian bees
there will be a beekeeping organization somewhere close to wherever tyou live. contact them, they will put you in touch with someone from whom you can buy a "nuc" hive, which will be a queen and a few worker bees.

once you get your shite set up at home, you bring a frame box to to the beekeeper, he'll dump the nuc into your box, which you then bring home and set on your hive

I want. Was just thinking about keeping a hive in my yard. then I started thinking about all the honey extraction equipment I'd need and I thought again.

How much work goes into maintaining them? Do you have to do anything to protect the colony from disease or anything like that?

not too much really
you can medicate them with hive top feeders if you want to, i dont

i just leave them be, and take honey about every 2 years. hive beetles are the biggest concern, you can try to keep them out but a few wont do too much harm

they are cool creatures to observe and if you keep a garden or orchard, they are indispensable

I use to help a guy rob his hives and make honey. He had a pretty good operation just outside of Marksville. We have made 14 55 gal. drums in a weekend.
Had a few of my own and helped my grandfather set some up too. I'm not familiar with "nucs". We would take the top box or two off of a hive at night and move it where we wanted it and just add a queen bee to it to make a new hive. I'm guessing that's what a nuc is, but not sure.

didn't know it took that long, how much honey do you get from 2 hives? Seems like a lot of maintenance just to harvest every 2yrs...

you can take honey every year if you want, but remember why the bees are making honey...its their food. i dont have the hives because i want honey, i have them because i want bees
