Considering buying a Roof Top Tent (RTT) when I get my interest-free government loan back in a few weeks. Anyone used one before?

For the last few years, whenever we take a fishing trip for a weekend we just sleep in the cab of the truck. It works in a pinch, but let's face it- it sucks.

We kayak fish, and it is usually my son and I going- when I have both kayaks, they're on a trailer so a popup trailer won't work. My son also wants to start taking trips up to the Ozarks- we did one a few years ago before we got into kayak fishing; it would be nice to do it again, camping in the state parks and hauling the kayaks and mountain bikes for some fun.

It seems a RTT would fit the bill nicely.
Easier to setup and pack down than the ground tent, and since alot of the areas we go have sand, I'm thinking it being high will keep alot of the sand out of the tent- something that just does not happen when using a ground tent!

I've started seeing a couple on rooftops around town- definitely more of a desert/pacific northwest thing more so than down here though.

Thinking about this one:
Tepui Kukenam Ruggedized- in Grey instead of Orange.

I pee too much at night. It would never work for me.

I weigh too much and like to get it in too much when camping. It would never work for me.

I've looked at them for a few years but I've never pulled the trigger on one. I always talk myself out of it because of practical reasons. In my opinion you get the elevation and ease of setup you're looking for from a hammock tent but you get the added bonus of being highly portable. This is nice if you ever decide to do an overnight float trip in the kayaks.

You can store kayaks on top of a popup. I don't know what kind of vehicle you drive but that Yakima roof rack system pictured in the OP is >$300. So you got a hefty expense in that before you've even bought the tent.

I hope those come with wheel chocks. Other than this it looks like a neat set up above ground & bears/snakes/spiders/coons.

Oh, you could send out quite the waterfall from the front at night while your lady has to walk the ladder.

I have been looking at them for years and i am going to pull the trigger on one this spring, the mattresses are very comfortable in the models I have looked at.

That's a great RTT. I have a few friends that have that brand. They are also cool mounted on an old M 101 trailer, if you have young kids.

You can, yes. I guess I should clarify- a popup is a little out of my budget, and then I would have to haul the popup everywhere I wanted to launch the kayaks. The benefit of a popup would be if I could set up a "basecamp" and then leave and come back to it each night. Wouldn't be able to do that if I had the kayaks on it too. And I already have the kayak trailer and don't have the space to accommodate another at the house.

Already have a roof rack that will hold the RTT, so no worries there.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I had to get out the cab to take one when sleeping in the truck, so this isn't an issue.

And if it were- just unzip the side and aim for the trees! Or bring an empty bottle with ya into the tent!

Yea, I almost pulled the trigger a few years ago on the smaller Ayer. I have a bigger vehicle now though, so figured I would get the bigger model.

The only issue I have is that I have never seen one in person- this will be purchased sight unseen. No one carries them down here! Would be nice to see the product before spending the cash, but unless we take a road trip it doesn't look like that will happen.

Ive always wanted to build up a trailer and have the tent mounted on top. Id rather not have it on the car because if you want to leave, you have to take everything down. With a trailer, you can just leave the trailer and gear and head out.

Check out expeditionportal and let the drooling commence.

Would be ideal. I've been looking at ExPo for years admiring some of those setups. In fact, there's a rep on the site for Tepui (tent brand) that can save you a little on a tent. Not much, but would basically pay for shipping.

If I had lighter kayaks, I would consider putting the tent on the trailer and the kayaks on the roof. . . but one is a hefty Pro Angler that weighs in at over 120lbs and the other is an Outback that is only a little lighter at 80lbs. Taking those off and putting them back up would get old quick.

I'm not familiar with these. How is it easier to put up and take down one of these over a regular tent?

That's exactly why people put them on trailers, so they can unhook and go exploring via 4x4. Besides, those old military trailers are cool.

Yeah, I have a bunch of friends that post on expedition portal. I once drove to Panama from Lafayette. I like expedition type stuff.

To the OP, you will be happy with the build quality sight unseen. Like I said, those are very nice RTTs and priced better than some of the more expensive ones that are pretty much the same.

Here's a video of setting one up- the guy isn't in a rush and can set it up in less than 2 minutes. I'd imagine it could be done faster if he had some pep in his step!

Most people keep bedding and pillows inside the tent, so unlike a regular ground tent, once the tent is up, it's ready to be used.

Comparing it to my ground tent- a Coleman 4 person tent- the Coleman itself is pretty easy to setup (less than 5 min)- once you make room on the ground. But then if I need to use the tie downs, that takes a little longer. . . and then pumping up the air mattress and adding the blankets, and the rainfly... once fully setup, you're looking at about 15-20min.
And breaking camp takes much longer- getting air out the mattress, packing everything back up. Packing up a RTT takes a little longer than setting it up, but it doesn't seem unreasonable.

But again, I've never seen one in person, so can't say for sure how long it would take to setup and pack up.

Fair enough. Being able to leave everything in it would be pretty nice. Looks pretty neat.
