.357 did the job, but deer moved off after the shot and required some tracking.
.41, .44 were both in the sweet spot
.500 dropped the deer like a sack of dirt.

I remember reading a book on how when the cartridge first came out it was the most powerful cartridge and people used it on elk and bear. He went on to describe how it is now barely considered adequate for rabbit

Serious articles were written about possible wrist damage from firing the .357 back when it was released.
It was also loaded hotter then IIRC.
Meanwhile, Elmer Keith and his group of .44 Associates were shooting through power poles with hopped up .44 Specials and snickering at the .357. Of course, Mr. Keith was later the father of the .44 Magnum...
