Wanting me to send in my duck wings in this year to do a survey on ages. Sounds cool if it's legit? Says they will send me prepaid postage bags to send them in. At the end of the year they will send me a report on sex species and age of birds I have submitted.. I know the sex and species but age may be interesting.

It's legit. USFWS does this yearly. I believe there was a guy a month or so ago that posted what he got back from them on the age and sex. IIRC, he had a bunch of green-wing/cinnamon teal because they can't tell the difference between the wings (which is odd to me, because I swear we learned the difference in wildlife techniques, but I could be mistaken).

It's legit but it gets to be a pain in the arse. I hormone today too. I did it about 10 years ago back then you signed up for three years at a time. I had drying duck wings all over the house.

As much as I enjoy the research it produces I will pass this time.

it is legit...I did it a few years in a row and enjoyed the opportunity to help with the research.

I also did it one year for woodcock as well.

I'm going send them a bunch of coot wings.. When the hell do them things migrate anyways? Must be at night. I've never seen a coot migration day where big droves of coots are flying high.

I believe coots do actually migrate at night.

Yep it's real. I kept a log last year of all my dove hunts for them.

Just got the letter in the mail yesterday that asked me to participate this year by keeping the log and a wing from all doves killed during the first 2 weeks of the season.

I got my letter as well. Thanked me for participating in the HIP and asked me to send in wings/tail feathers next year.

They obviously don't know what a terrible shot I am. If I shoot as proficiently next season as last, their report is gonna be very short.

May also help with public health and influenza preparations. Good program.
