its an awesome feeling to have a dog find one..

The dog is as excited as you are!

Both very true. When mine finds one, even if I know where the deer is and am just giving the dog some practice, i make sure the dog is super fired up about it so he'll know what a good job he did. I'm talking jumping around, hooting and hollering, mucho praise. It's pretty awesome

The dog was Dusty I believe. He gives 100% credit to the dog, that the deer wouldn't have been found if not for that cur. Highly, highly recommended

Is that a black mouth cur? fine looking dog

Yeah, black mouth. They put him on first blood and he went straight to the deer and never checked up even though blood ran out.

are these dogs just bred to follow blood trails or is there extensive training involved.

i think a dog following a blood trail to find a deer is pretty damned bad arse.

Amazed that more folks dont back out and call a dog. A hunter trailing will jump a deer but a dog can bay it and the deer will damn near let you walk right up to it.

I've trained my Boykin to track and he's found 6-7 over the last two years. It's awesome to watch him work.

Did you follow any particular training method or book you could point out?

Not really. It would have probably been best to save blood and make practice runs in the woods and all, but I didn't do any of that. I would take my dog on every tracking job we had, even/especially the short bloody ones, just to give him an idea of what the goal is, and once he found the deer, I made to act be so excited and make the dog think he just won the damn lottery. Also be sure to give treats and/or cut a chunk of meat off the deer and give to the dog as a reward.

I guess I was lucky, as my dog really took to it quickly and naturally. I think all dogs have the instinct to track. It's all about giving them experience and praise for that light bulb to go off. The best thing I'd say is to get the dog on some easy trails for him to figure it out. You can't expect to put him on a 4 hour old, 300 yarder through a thicket and expect him to find it on his first try. A couple easy ones and he'll figure it out.

Also, I have a separate collar to use when we go tracking. It's an old collar that I put a bell on it. That way, he knows his business time when we in the woods and that collar goes on.

Congrats on the kill. They do run to water if able too. I've pulled a couple out of a creek.
My cur found a few for me with no formal training, but we grew up on 60 acres that was surrounded by timber co land with a creek throug the middle of it. He spent many days out there on his own chasing deer. You could pretty well hear him about once a day for several years chasing one around so he had a nose and liked to use it.

Thanks for the reply. I saved some of the blood from my deer this past weekend along with some strips of hide. I was going to use them to make really short trails at first and see how he does.

I also like the idea of using a different collar so he knows what is about to happen.

I don't have a traditional tracking breed but I think he could possibly do it.

I am at least going to give it a try and see if he picks it up.
