Anybody have a dog with food allergies?

My 4 month old golden retriever has been tearing herself apart for the past 3 weeks. Constantly itching and biting at herself.. Starting to lose hair around her armpits, belly, and base of her tail. Vet has been giving her ivermectin injections weekly for the last 3 weeks to treat for mites and symptoms haven't gotten any better so I'm starting to think it's something else. She has all the symptoms of having a food allergy: dandruff, gas, soft stools, constant itching and scratching, sometimes a foul odor of her skin, biting her paws, etc..
Just wondering if anyone here has a pet with a food allergy and how big of a pain in the arse it is to deal with it. Going back to see the vet wednesday for her next injection and going to talk to her more about it then.

I do. The only thing we have done that has helped is feed her Natural Balance limited ingredient food, and no treats containing grain.

Natural Balance limited ingredient food,
Did you find out what was causing the allergy by doing the 12 week testing period BS or did you just switch her to the food and that worked? Because there's a bunch of different ones.

Trial and error until we found this.

Yes my wife's dog had bad allergies. She is highly allergic to beef, lamb, liver, milk and kangaroo. She is constantly itching and biting as well. The wife bought some pills from naturvet called calming aid pills and they definitely help. She gives her one in the morning and one at night. Look into it.

I'll definitely check that out

Although food allergies are less common than environmental allergies in dogs I would suspect it in this case bc the pup is so young.
If you're going to do it on your own remember that beef, chicken, soy, lamb, corn, and wheat are the usual offenders, especially the first 2.
Also remember your treats, bones, snacks, supplements, heartworm meds are usually flavored with beef or chicken

I hate to hear that.
My golden had really dry skin an lost hair above his tail when he was about 1 yr old. Changed his food from chicken to salmon and started giving him fish oil pills with every meal. He just turned 4 and his skin and coat are great.

How was this determined? That would be one of the first documented kangaroo allergies in the US if legit

Yeah I'm assuming it's a food allergy but I'm sure I've got a lot of time and trial and error ahead of me until I find out for sure.
Gonna talk to the vet wednesday and figure out a good diet to switch her to for the next 8-12 weeks.
Just bought a 44lb bag of Dr. Tim's a week ago too

Was he constantly itching and biting at himself?

Both of my dogs hated the kangaroo flavor. Went back to lamb and rice.

I was actually just as surprised to hear kangaroo, but come to find out there are a few foods that have kangaroo in them. One of the wife's friends said they feed there dog some type of natural food that has kangaroo in it. I never heard of such a thing. The vet did some type of allergy test for all types of different things found in food and this was one.

I thought one of my dogs ( i have 2 ) had some type of food allergy but turned out it was fleas he was allergic to. one single flea will cause him to chew himself up and leave a rash.Even though my dogs never miss a flea treatment the flea must bite your dog before it will get poisoned, that's where the problem starts.my dog is 8 yrs and this this started last season, so we keep our yard treated as well as neighbors now and so far it's working. Be sure you rule this out first.

I have a bulldog (yea I know) that is allergic to chicken. I found this pretty early when switching him from his puppy food. I buy him food without chicken and its pretty easy actually. Also, grains in foods/treats can magnify certain ailments your dog is having. I believe grains produce yeast in dogs and that is where certain skin issues and smells can come from. So cut those out as well till you get a handle on the situation.
When you go back to the vet, ask them about an allergy test. I think they are around $250 but it will tell you what going on.

Thanks for all the input fellas
Yeah that's what I'm planning on asking about. I'm not too worried about the cost, just want to get this shite figured out so I can quit worrying about it. It's starting to affect her training a little so I'm getting annoyed.

for the time being, give her some Benadryl with her food. 1mg per pound.
