My 11-year-old needs a shotgun for 4H competition shooting. Are there any youth model 20 gauges that I should consider?

How big is he/she?

At 11 you're on the border of shooting a full sized gun

Weatherby makes a pretty good youth semi-auto 20 ga. My son is 10 and can handle it. It does take some time to break in though.

Benelli makes a montefeltro that comes as a youth shotgun and has a full size stock included. This could literally be a shotgun your kid has for the rest of their life. I have a 20ga montefeltro that I love. I shoot it all the time at bridgeview for the Thursday fun shoot.

He is about 100lbs. I not against a 12 gauge I just don't want him worried about recoil when he is shooting.

For competition shooting, don't get a pump, you need and over under or an auto. Do you have a budget?

Look at the Yildiz 20 gauge from Academy ($429). My son is also 11 and shooting 4H shotgun with EBR and he is nowhere near ready for a full size shotgun based on length of pull. He is shooting a Mossberg Bantam SA-20 in the same price range. As an autoloader the recoil is much easier on a youth.

The Franchi I got for my 13 year old is not very big, but isn't a youth. Highly recommend.

Preferably, no more than about $500.

I'm not saying its ideal or anything, but my brother shot nationals with a youth 870 20ga and did very well. If the budget was tight a good pump would probably be better than a POS double.

I've had one since I was a kid, and it's still my favorite shotgun... (I'm almost 40 now)

Most kids have trouble shooting reports and true pairs with a pump.

Definitely not ideal, but it can work.

It's better than a stoeger double for sure. The back trigger on my stoeger must be 9 pounds.

Couldn't agree more for competition! Don't take our word for it, go to your son's next practice and see how many pump actions shotguns you see or take a trip to Bridgeview and do the same. One less thing for a novice shooter to think about and learn.

Benelli Nova Youth or Small frame. My son has one that he still loves to shoot and he’s 6’ tall now. Great, durable, fun gun. Bought ours at Sullivan’s in Bastrop.

the weatherby 20 guage youth auto and the Mossberg sa-20 are great guns for the money. it's what my wife shoots.

if I wanted my kid to have good equipment and had the money, I would get him a beretta/beneli 20 guage youth model semi. he will shoot it forever.

Kicks like a rented plow mule. It might be ok for shooting skeet but you put a 3" mag shell in there for ducks and you are on a fast tack for that kid to hate shooting. I highly recommend a good youth model auto 20 and not a pump.

Yeah. I agree here. I was lucky, spent lots of time on the grandparent's farm. When you can down a pheasant with a .410, you're a hero at 6 years old ! Lol

Been many a kid learned to shoot well on a youth 870 or youth mossberg. It's no youth monetefeltro or custom kreighoff but it is very much serviceable, even for competition.

I bought my sons a Franchi. Cut down one stock and bought a regular one when they got older. Used the same gun for both of them. It was virtually flawless. I recommend it highly. It was the gas operated gun. I still have it as they have graduated to larger gauges. It’s been to Argentina twice with cases of shells run through it. Enjoy the purchase as it’s always fun to buy the boys their first guns!!
