I have bobwhites and chickens, as well. Set up the chicken coop with a back hatch to the nesting boxes. Wifey can go collect eggs without having to go in coop.

Good looking set up. My ladies should be old enough to lay in Oct. I've got a coupe on wheels. It's been working out pretty good where I have no dead grass and no mess. I've got 4 acres and could def set them up in the back where it really wouldn't matter but I'll be Moving soon. I've I pull the trigger on the property that I'm looking at I'll build something similar to yours. Again, very nice

You should get a salt water fish tank and raise stone crabs and red snapper.

my chickens are dumb, buffs and easter eggers... refuse to go in the coop to lay or roost, they go on top of it
my golden courtournix quails and pharaohs haven't given me any eggs in almost 2 weeks as well, I have no clue why not either. on strike?

How much of an effort is it to raise quail? Do you have any pictures of your setup? Nothing better than a jar of pickled quail eggs.

I don't know about everyone else, but my birds are finicky as hell, and the young ones are fragile. but pretty much keep them fat, dumb and happy. the pens I have are 6 females to 1 male incase I feel like hatching and are made from mesh hardware cloth so when they shite, I don't have to clean up, it just goes on the ground. theyre 1 foot high, 1' deep and 3' long. pretty simple to raise, but I have no clue why they just stopped laying completely.
pretty tasty too when I get too many males from a hatch

sand is the worst thing you can do along with wood shavings.. WORST... get rid of it now and just use bare ground and just add hay or lime. its going to get wet and stink to hell.

Our quail have slowed down laying also. Haven't stopped tho. Big weather swings & stress (loud noise) effect egg laying. When they aren't laying they eat just as much feed as when the are laying. 1st year of a quail/chickens life is there best laying. As far as chickens laying all over the place, get some golf balls any put in the box. They should sit on them & start laying in the box. My wife has really gotten in pickling last couple years. She sales pickled quail eggs, okra, asparagus, green beans, a few others at the Pointe Coupee Farmers Market & a local sea food store.

I started to put a small lamp in the quail cages to keep them at least spitting out some eggs every few days, but I figure the rain messed with them.

Our coops are under a 30 X 22 shed. We use the sand like a cat liter box. Wife cleans the sand up. I have a year care business & sand/quail poop is great fertilizer. We find the sand works very well. Kind of like bringing a horse into stable. Got to clean that stable daily.

Here is our quail setup. Not hard to care for. Wife spends 10-15 minutes a day with them. Feed, clean water, & clean up.

I can't seem to keep my replacements alive. ill hatch about a dozen or so every two weeks, but only one or two will stay alive. my brooder looks exactly like that. only thing I haven't tried is putting more electrolytes and stuff in the parents water

Just move to Grand Isle & open a bait/crab shop. Jesus that would be the life.

Are you regulating their temp? 100 week one, 95 week 2, 90 week 3. When they get their adult feathers we put them outside. We also start them out with feed on a paper plate. After 4/5 days they usually figure out the feeder & we pull the plate. We put rocks 1st couple weeks in with their water. Keeps the water clean & keeps them from drowning. 1st sight of a bully we kill. Male or female. We had a female kill 3/4 birds before we figured it out and got rid of her. Male wasn't doing his job either. Got to protect those hens.

yep, regulating the temp. usually after a few days out of the incubator either they live or die. had to pull a few bullies out and cull them after beating up on the other birds. usually if I have one hatch first, that's the bully bird. happens every hatch.

Sounds like they are not eating/drinking. Thier yolk last 3 days. They can live 3 days on it with out eating or drinking Try putting thier feed on a paper plate & extra water. Make it easy for them.

Been thinking about getting some laying hens. In your opinion, is this box big enough for 4? Built it for a puppy but am done with that now, and it's just sitting in my yard. 12' x 5' with back box - 3.5' x 5'.

Thanks
