Every year as I get out stuff I find alkaline batteries have burst or corroded in a lot of stuff and then the items will not work with new batteries. I have tried cleaning them off WD 40 etc no luck. Always a problem with anything fishing related.

Does anyone have a trick etc to get these items working again? It always just looks like connector plates are damaged.

A wire brush and CRC battery cleaner. They make a marine battery cleaner as well but I've never used it.

Remove the batteries before you store the items, easiest fix.

Spray the circuits boards with Corrosion X.

I use vinegar on qtips to dissolve the acid. Dry with qtips or paper towel. Follow up with isopropyl alcohol to dry.

Remove alkalines when not in use.

I've heard that pencil erasers will clean slightly corroded connectors

That's what I use. They are slightly abrasive and with a paste of baking soda you can clean most corrosion off the contacts.

my wife uses coca cola on the cheap kids toys and most of the time it works...

I'll use crc battery cleaner and intricately take things apart to clean something of value.

I have used the baking soda on a damp q tip method with success.

Some of the better battery companies will replace your damaged items if documented properly.
