Thats a 98 mauser. Fantastic rifle. Not sure what that one is worth, depends a whole lot on the quality of the work done to it. They can range from nearly worthless to 10's of thousands. That ones looks like a run of the mill sporterized surplus rifle, so probably worth a few hundred bucks.

Thank you DSAFI. That was sort of what I was thinking about it in regards to value. Just been going through some hand me downs and just wasn't sure exactly what I had in these 2 items.

That’s not a K98. That is a Gewehr 98. That means it was a full length rifle made before or during WW I. It was undoubtedly produced between 1901 and 1918.

They are nice rifles and the actions tend to be a bit more finely finished than a later K98, particularly than the K98s made after 1943. That said, there is no appreciable difference. I would normally say that one like is worth around $300. These days? Who knows?

I actually think I looked at that wrong. Looking at that, the thing that stands out most is the hand guard retaining ring attached directly to the receiver. It does actually say Kar 98 in that old Germanic script, so it’s of pre 1918 manufacture and not the later 98k.

What I believe you have there is a Polish Wz. 29. That is nothing more than a 98 Mauser made for Polish service. Many were made from German Kar 98 receivers after WW 1.

Take the front scope mount off and see what year is marked on the front receiver ring. Mausers can be difficult. They were in use and the official rifle of everywhere from Chile and China to Turkey and Iran. Somewhere between 14 and 20 million 98s were made.
