Is it as expensive as buying a new boat and paying sales tax?

Sell prize boat. Pay taxes. Buy lesser model and have gas and beer money left over

It's going to be more than sales tax. They use the msrp of the boat and count that as income. You owe all applicable taxes on that amount of income. It may vary depending on where you fall in the tax brackets.

ETA: And the burden should only fall on the person being awarded the boat.

i wonder what the standings for the tournament were
howd ya boy do fishing the dock

It was a BIG bass tournament. Paid 15 places per hour and took about a 5.5lb bass to get a check. So he did about the same as 2500 other anglers.

I was at the tournament and it didn't happen exactly like reported. They drew the names of five people and had them get on stage then they drew again to eliminate them one by one. They had gotten down to the last two contestants and drawn but not revealed the last name for elimination. Bob Sealy was talking with the contestants building the suspense. He asked them where they was fishing, Jenkins said from a dock and Mcmahon said from his boat and that he wanted Jenkins to have the boat. That's when Bob Sealy revealed the McMahon as the winner and confirmed he wished to give the boat to Jenkins. Essentially the same thing happened last year except the good samaritan was eliminated. Still a classy act though and Mcmahon can fish any Sealy Outdoors sanctioned tournament for free forever.

Why no gift tax ?

Treated as income ?

So if ya win $40000 on Millionaire there is no gift just taxed as income ?
