Guys I'm brainstorming as our family is growing. Before I made any phone calls, I am hoping to get somewhat local experience and advice on adding on to a home.

Our home is in Lafayette parish outside city limits and is 3bed, 2 bath. We paid around 150k in 2012. Any thoughts on adding a room? We have yard space on the left side of our home (that is where the septic tank is however, not sure if that is a deal breaker?)

I appreciate any advice on what steps I should take, how realistic this is and a rough idea of potential cost.

The only help I can offer is for you to have the new area treated for termites and to have the ability and access to treat the seam where the two slabs meet in the future.

It's a cost that at least adds value to home. Money well spent.

You cannot and should not build near your septic tank. You will need to have it pumped every 4-5 years and you cannot put heavy things on your drain fields.

Jembeurt is correct about termite treatment.

If you don't have enough property to build out, you might consider building up.

Anytime you add on to a home you are asking for slab/differential settlement problems.
