i have a wrought iron gate that goes across my driveway. Lately I've had an itch to add a motorized opener to it. Has anyone ever done this? Is it something a not-so-mechanically inclined person could do or should I contact a professional?

We have a mighty mule. You can get them at Home Depot or off of amazon. Mine is powered by a 35 amp/hr AGM battery and solar panel. It's been pretty trouble free. The control box got some ants in it but it was easy to diagnose and easy to fix. Pretty simple but it helps to be handy with small electronics because replacement control boards are a couple hundred dollars even though the parts themselves are cheap.

I put a mighty mule at my old house, install was pretty easy. Only problem I ever had was battery went dead and wouldn't operate. Pretty simple to do with some basic tools. I hooked mine up to power in lieu of solar panen

That's what I'm gonna do. Only thing that has slowed that down is the price of wire to run 75ft
