Capsized 25-27ft CC out of S. Pass in Venice. 1 survivor and 4 vicitms that drowned. Stay safe out there guys. Water is cold and hypothermia sets in quick. No life jackets as well.

So sad.

I rarely think of fishing as a dangerous sport, even though it is.

Louisiana authorities say that four people have died and one has survived after their boat capsized during a fishing trip on the Gulf of Mexico.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesman Adam Einck said the five left the Venice marina in south Louisiana at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday but that their twin-engine boat's motor went out an hour later. The boat took on water and capsized.

Einck said three victims were from Alabama and one was from Louisiana. He said the survivor, an Alabama man, held onto a rope on the front of the capsized boat as the four became unresponsive, apparently from hypothermia. The crew of another boat found the survivor around 1 p.m. He was treated for mild hypothermia.

The victims included the survivor's father and uncle and the uncle's girlfriend. Their names were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

No guide. NOLA.com has a up date of the story. Sad note to the familys. I don't think it was a CC boat. I was told it was a GW walkaround. They took water over the transom after loosing all power. In fact, one motor shut down and then they shut down the other. It was at that point they filled with water and the boat flipped.

My prays go out to there familys.

Dead are Kerri Burns, 33; Randy Dowsey, 58, uncle of the survivor; and Wayne Dowsey, 51, father of the survivor, all of Alabama; and Kenny Mock, 58, of Metairie. Rescued was Heath Dowsey, 33, of Alabama. Based on what Heath Dowsey told authorities, the five all left a Venice marina at about 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning for a fishing trip, said Louisiana Deptartment of Wildlife and Fisheries spokesman Adam Einck.

I went to high school with and know the survivor well. His father(Randy) and uncle(Wayne) were among the ones that didn't make it. I haven't found out what exactly happened yet, but the Dowseys were not new to offshore fishing/boating as we live on the coast as well...

Terrible...

ETA: the link above has the father/uncle names backwards.

What were the conditions out there when this happened.

If they were taken water over the transom, there must have been some pretty heavy seas or way to small of a boat to be out there under the conditions.

All offshore fisherman need to take note of this. You can't live long in cold water if you have a lifejacket or not. Epirb, ditchbag with handheld VHF and liferaft are ESSENTIAL offshore. Particularly in the winter. Very sad for the family. Be safe out there
