I wanted a 45.70 until my buddy told me about his experienced at the range. He was sighting in his .444 and next to him was a guy sighting in a 45.70. They each shot the other's rifle to experience the difference. He said that the 45.70 gave more of a "slow-solid" recoil, kind a a thud, while the .444 was a "sharp-solid" kick, if that makes any sense at all. Both agreed the .444 was a more "pleasant" shooting experience. As for ballistics, the .444 is a bit flatter shooting, giving a bit more distance. I've come around to the .444.
ETA: Of course, the 45.70 sledge hammer effect at 100 yards and in gives me wood.

I've shot a few of each caliber. I'm a .45-70 fan. Neither is very fun to shoot.

Ok. I haven't shot either, so I don't speak from experience but hearsay. I'm looking forward to shooting my friend's .444 soon. He has a limbsaver pad on his and swears by 'em. Your thoughts?

Worth every penny on either caliber. Not absolutely necessary or anything, but it does make them a whole lot more tolerable to shoot. I highly recommend putting one on any gun that has unpleasent recoil. Of course, if you're a recoil junky you won't like it.
It doesn't work as well as a muzzle brake or anything, but it helps alot.
As far as caliber, get whichever one you want. They are about the same for all in tents and porpoises. Better to get the same one your buddy shoots incase you run get in a bind for ammo somehow one day.

According to published stats, the .35 Whelen has considerably more kick in ft-lbs. than the .444 Marlin. The Whelen is more powerful and more flat shooting.
I have a .444 and use the Hornady Leverevolution ammo, which works great. It groups well and has good terminal ballistics.
To reduce recoil, I use a Limbsave recoil pad and also added a 1 lb mercury recoil supressor in the stock to add weight.

THIS! Mine will kick your arse just sighting it in. I just put a new scope on mine and I will wait till my son comes to sight it in.
Took two deer with it last year. First year with it. That sucker puts one hell of a hole in the deer.
I even hunted with it when the reg gun season open just for the hell of it. Oh, had to change the scope due to the back lens fell out from shooting it. WTF?

You are right. You do not notice recoil when you shoot at game, but remember what it feels like when you shoot targets at a rifle range. Of course, I am a wimp and use a Caldwell lead sled for target sighting.

The .35 will kick more than the 444 and 45/70. My 444 shoots 6" low at 200 sighted dead on at 100yds. What I dont get is that all of these guys that are getting the long shooting .35 and sight in by the ballistics on the back of the box instead of actually shooting there gun and see where it is hitting. If you plan on shooting your gun out to 200-350 yds you should have been practicing shooting since the summer to get some shooting time.

BTW, a 444 is not an old cartridge. (1960's I think) 44 mag is older.
Also, how does a 44 mag single shot compare to a synthetic stocked, electronic ignition stainless barreled muzzel loader?
The season is only as primitive as you make it in LA. and MS. which is good and bad.
My only beef with muzzel loaders is I hate having to clean them right away.
I sometimes toy with the idea of getting a flint lock rifle.

On that .44mag, if you handload that sucker, you can get it to cook. Killed many a deer with a .44mag pistal and rifle.

The Whelen will pretty much mirror the trajectory of the 30-06 while the .444 doesn't shoot as flat as a 30-30.
Really, it is hard to imagine that the 35 Whelen is considered a "primitive" weapon.
