pic 4. is that an eastern indigo or just a big arse racer?

Big arse racer. I’ve caught longer ones, but none thicker.

I see non-venomous snakes described as "harmless" all of the time....While the harm may be on shortlived, a racer will impose his attitude on you and make you think he's worse that he actually is.

Here’s a few bites from a black-masked racer I caught last year. That first “oww” was really more of a “you a-hole” oww than a painful “oww”.

what is the latest prevailing theory on the purpose of the hard point on the red bellied mud snake’s tail? Last I heard it was believed to be a means of pinning slimy prey

That’s what I’ve always heard - not sure if that’s conjecture or observed behavior. Here’s the tail on a larger one we got a couple years ago…

One thing I’m certain of is that they will actively poke you with the tail when you’re holding them. I had’t handled a large one prior and always thought the poking was accidental - but they 100% do it intentionally. Doesn’t hurt though.

Where did you go in Apalachicola? I’ve heard that St. Vincent’s Island is covered up with big rattlers.

Let me get this straight. You took time off work and he spent his spring break from school to pick up snakes?

That's pretty cool in reality

I mean different strokes but when I was his age I was drinking as many beers as possible and chasing tail

No work for me - I’m retired.

And the kid has 4 youtube channels and 2 million subscribers, so he must be doing something right!

Honestly I don’t even know where we were in Apalachicola. We were just cruising sandy roads and hopping out to check areas that looked good. The kid researches everything and plans the route mostly, and I just turn when he says to turn.

If you posted that bite on tiktok saying "Black Mamba bite" you would instantly have thousands(millions?) of people believing you have.

I'm always looking for Pygmy Rattlesnakes but still have never found one.

We went to Jones Swamp here in Pcola on Saturday and saw at least 10 water snakes. Went to Fort Pickens and Sabine Point yesterday to try and find a diamondback but it was a little too cool I think.

the one above looked like it lost an eye or has some kind of fungal infection. The other eye looked normal.

I have caught a couple larger ones and their tails look like the picture you have, but the small/juveniles have a longer and much pointier point. I have always been reluctant to catch the small ones just because it looks like it could break off in you, if it was able to penetrate your skin. I don’t know if it would be able to or not. I can remember the stories of them “stinging you”, but the same people are probably the ones that told me as a kid that a racer chased them all the way back home.

I thought it was for anchoring their self in the mud when there was current. Is that an older theory that has changed?

Mud snake tails are the same and I've seen one with an amphiuma wrapped up and using the point on his tail to hold it while he got it in his mouth.
