I thought they couldn't either but that sure looks like one. The speculum color looks like a wood duck. Even the bill has a shape like a wood duck
Even though hybrids can express different genes and most hybrids don't have typical traits that does not look like a "typical" Brewers duck

Look at the bill. The nail on the bill is very noticeable. Neither a gadwall or mallard has that.

I sent it around to some knowledgeable folks, and they seem to all think wood duck and mallard. I've never seen one. That's why I asked.

Sounds like it should. He's in the freezer now. One of the wings is busted but all feathers intact. I'm sure a taxidermist could fix it up.

We aren't that far behind Team Sprig. I should have much increased numbers throughout the rest of the year starting Saturday and will be hopefully adding a bunch more geese. There's a chance. All hope is not lost.
